Pool Swim - how are you getting on?

I got my watch a few weeks ago and went for a swim. Firmware 3.10.
It was like magic! Each time I finished a length it had counted it and added distance. When I got home I could see stroke, SWOLF and distance.
Really good tracking and motivation.

Updated to 4.2
During the swim the distance looked really high. I then realised that it was adding distance as I watched during a rest. It jumped 210m in one go, then I saw the numbers start to count up like a clock!
When I hit save, the distance dropped dramatically and when I looked on Garmin connect the distance and lengths were close to what I did, with some errors.
This means tracking seems to work OK but in activity, display is out.

I then tested in the living room, doing 'fake' strokes!
15 seconds or so to count a length.
All was OK up to 15 lengths, then it shot up to 31. I hit stop and it reverted to 15 again.

Currently rolled back to 3.1 and the 'fake' activity seems to track OK. Not had a chance to check it in the pool yet.

I have filed a report to the Beta team, but just wondered if anyone else is getting good results? I have seen other reports of oddness with recording and am trying to work out what to do....from install firmware to send the watch back!

I hope it's working for you, but I feel like a guinea pig at the moment - here was me thinking the 5 plus would just enhance the 5 and all bugs were ironed out before launch.

Would love to hear other experiences.

Yes, just the root of the Garmin folder.
Be aware you'll lose your settings and records. I think you can back up the right files and restore them after the rollback.
3.1 is still the best I've found for swimming.
  • Still no luck with 5.00 final release software! Interval pace and interval swolf are still missing while swimming! No words...

Weird, as you would think that is a simple fix. Are the lap distances fixed?

How do you go about using interval pace/swolf while you are swimming? If you stop and check those values mid stroke, won't that throw those values off? Myself, I tend to only look at those things after the interval is over, but am curious if this is something I should be checking :). I normally just know my pace because I have to go a certain to speed to complete my s (e.g. 10 x 100m @ 1:20). So if the pace time allows me to hit the lap button to end an interval, and then again to start a new one I will do it. But if the pace is touch and go (as in those 10x100s), I will just record a 1000m until the set is over and then review the specific intervals later on.

Lap distance always worked fine. Have you ever swim 1500m? Good, if you did, maybe you would know that in a such long distance, interval pace is very important for the final time, I always take a look at my pace while swimming long distance...
  • Ha. If only you knew the number of meters and races I did in my 14 years of competitive swimming. In any regard I understand what you are doing; I just had a vision in my head of you in the middle of a 25 trying to glance at you watch to check your speed. Doing that running is easy, but in the pool it breaks your stroke / axis. But you probably do this at the wall in any regard like me. In the interim you may want to give Interval Time a shot. In addition to pace it gives you position, slippage and what is needed to make up ground. I suppose I am old school in this regard. Typically I don’t have to review my pace often, I just do it on feel. And that is just due to years of conditioning and experience. Interesting that it is still there even after being out of the water for 15 years.

Hopefully they resolve this field for you so you can get back to enjoying your training.

    Good
  • However, why they continue to add bugs firmware after firmware? I have reported this bug a month ago, they have fixed for Fenix 5, 5X why the have released a final production software knowing this?
  • I'm guessing by the absence of any posts for a couple of months that pool swimming has been sorted. I've only had mine a couple of weeks. I was aware of problems with the 5+ series and 935 in the pool so had a look for threads. Had my first pool swim with the 5S+ (5.57b) this morning. Pretty bad swim, but all seemed to be recorded properly - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3158768684
  • I can say that it works and worked brilliant for me.

My former Fenix 3 HR did already a good job on counting the lanes as long as I swim stable and constantly. But once it missed a lane, it missed a lane and there was no way to fix that.

With my current Fenix 5+ that's quiet different. First of all it's much harder to make it not count a lane, second once it missed a lane it corrects that mistake after a couple of lanes. And it does a perfect job on that.

For example you swim and at 500m + 1 Lane, the distance would stick to 500m and at +2 lanes it would continue to count from 525m on. At least the Fenix 3 HR would have done that.

The Fenix 5+ will do that as well but after +2 or +3 lanes it would also add the missing 25m onto the overall distance so that everything is back to normal.

    Best regards
    Christian
  • With 5.57 beta it works with no problems!
