Altimeter problem!!!

Let me begin by "thanking" Garmin Support Italy, for not replying at my email anymore. I've sent them an email, explaining the problems I have with my Fenix 5x Plus and they replied, telling me the procedure to reset my watch. Knowing it will not solve my problem, I did it anyway, worked fine for a couple of hours, but after that, SAME ISSUES! Mailed them again, letting them know that I did the FACTORY RESET exactly how they instructed me to do, but THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE! Been over a week now, STILL NO REPLY!!!
I can understand that some products are faulty, but I cannot understand the lack of common sense from the Garmi Assistance Italy, after you,as a client, paid 750€ for a faulty product and YOU, as a client, have to wait for weeks for a reply from Garmin Assistance or not even a generic reply at least.
Left Fitbit for their faulty products and sh*tty costumer care, to end up in the same situation! I've been patient for a month now, having to calibrate altimeter almost every day, but enough is enough. I paid for a working product, not for a faulty one!!!
  • Thanks DanyLarkin.
From what I understand, the altimeter problem is only fixed in the latest BETA. Having altimeter problems myself, I received a new watch last week and will test it the upcoming weekend intensifly while skydiving.
If using it as an altimeter I would always set it to altimeter rather than auto. The latter - I assume - might add another possible cause of misinterpreting data.
  • The altimeter issue addressed recently was a smoothing filter that worked too hard and removed some ups and downs. Especially visible if you did hill repeats. For those of you that get -4000 m or similar I would guess that you have a broken unit.

According to Garmin Assistance in Italy, it's not broken. Sent it to them, they kept it for 23 days, only did a Factory Reset to it and sent it back to me with the same issues. After an hour of use had the same issue. In 2 weeks after receiving it back from assistance, had the same issue with ALTIMETER and BAROMETER 4 or 5 times. At least now, with the latest beta, I can calibrate it, because before, I couldn't even do that, I had to Factory Reset it every time.
Paying 850€ for a watch, just to be frustrated with it's problems, it makes you feel like being robbed.
The funny thing is I am not the only one who's disappointed with GARMIN ASSISTANCE in Italy, but Garmin seems to not care about it.

While I susptected very much the same (smoothing filter) - do you have any (semi-)official confirmation for that?
  • No I don't have any official or semi-official answer, but according to others complaints and responses and my hill repeat height diagrams before and after it is a very probable guess.

I needed to scale the diagram in X dimension so that's why it is jagged in the "after diagram", but it is the same hill up and down a couple of times (approx 55 m) with roughly same speed on both occasions.

I still believe that the unit that gives -4000 is broken, independently what first line support in Italy says.

  • Same issue here. I tried all the fixes proposed here, but nothing seems to help. On days I work from home (with zero steps involved) I get between 50 to 100 climbed stairs. Really frustrating - and it only started recently for me. For 1 1/2 years with my Fenix 5s all was good. I wonder if it is a software issue that will be fixed soon or if I should send my Fenix in. Upgdaring to the latest beta firmware (12.51) did not make any difference either.

You will have to send it in Assistance. I've sent mine for the third time now, after they change the one with ALTIMETER and BAROMETER issues, they sent me a new one, but with screen issues.
