First Gen HRM-Run drops out after 2-ish mins

Second run with the new 5X+ and it did the same thing on each run - all strap related data; ground contact time & balance, stride length, vert oscillation, etc. stops recording at around 2 mins 14 seconds. My wife's new 5+ (not X) is doing the exact same thing. Still getting heart rate, cadence, etc, but that is likely coming from the watch when it drops the strap out. Battery changed in our HRM Runs a couple weeks ago.

We both just upgraded from 5X's which worked fine with the straps.

So my better half is home and running tests - she has 2 first-gen HRM-Runs, so she's tried them both.

    She's using a 5 Plus.

Same half mile run I was testing today. She got no running dynamics at all - this using her new 5 Plus and the HRM that was dropping out on previous runs. No running dynamics at all. On the second half mile, she turned off optical heart monitoring. Again, NO running dynamics at all, BUT she did get heart rate for the run. So the HRM is transmitting and the watch is receiving.

She switched to her other HRM Run, with a brand new battery, and got drop-outs early on again... but heart rate throughout. Return run turned off the wrist again, and as before, she got heart rate monitoring throughout the run but dynamics drops.

We'd figured the HR was switching over to wrist when the HRM would drop. That's not the case - the watch is not losing connection with the HRM-Run, just the advanced running dynamics channels.

She ran a regression test 5X and all data is present.

So the HRM-runs are fine. There's definitely a problem with the running dynamics data dropping, but not losing heart rate data from the HRM-Run.
  • The problem came from the watch, my hrm tri is working fine with my f5x, and not working with my f5x+
  • Really odd. Another run this morning, with my F5 Plus connected to my HRM Run (gen 1 with removable pod section) and I’ve had no drop outs of RD data throughout https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2805132289 This was particularly useful today, as I pulled something on the outside of my left hip mid way through, and you can see my GCT balance shift to the right for the remainder of the run (as I gingerly ran slowly back home - no more running for me for a few days I think :( )

I am not specialist and I don't have this issue and device but maybe there is issue because you have a lot of external apps .
i believe it should not be important how many external apps you install, but if I am right Garmin don't accept to instal any external apps, because after we have issue with connection .

Btw I see one of your apps have new update to improve connection ant
  • Jan502 It’s not me having the issue, I am posting to confirm that it’s not a universal problem for everyone and trying to understand why the others posting here are having the connection drops to their HRM Run/Tri.
  • EoSNJ Thank you for doing all that in-depth testing, we will be contacting you via the email address that is attached to your forums display name shortly to get more information on this.

Crispin_Ellisdon I hope your hip is doing better!

Crispin_Ellisdon would you mind sharing your device information for your HRM-Run (Model #, SW version, etc.) or how old it is?

I'm a user that hasn't had a single run without the advanced running dynamics dropping. I've tested with two different HRM-Run modules, but they are both relatively old: one came with my Forerunner 620 in Feb 2014, and the other came with my Fenix 3 in Feb 2015. They've had the firmware updated to the current version, and they both function perfectly with my Fenix 5X, but drop the running dynamics at almost precisely the 2:08 minute mark on every run with my Fenix 5 Plus.

As an interesting side note, I discovered last night that the watch does appear to receive the heart rate data stream from the HRM-Run module, even after the dynamics drop out. I had the watch Wrist Heart turned OFF and got HR data for the entire run, including recovery HR afterward.

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2804612822 - HRM-Run 388144. Wrist Heart Rate OFF. No running dynamics at all. Heart Rate and Cadence displayed for duration.

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2804646930 - HRM-Run 917102. Wrist Heart Rate OFF. Advanced Running Dynamics stopped at minute 2:08. Heart Rate and Cadence continued for duration and Recovery heart rate displayed after run

So sorry to hear about your hip! Coming off a recent injury myself, I can sympathize!
  • 2gr8pyrs I similarly have 2 HRM Run units; one I got with my Fenix 2 Performer bundle and the other with my Fenix 3 Performer bundle.

The first is model #1752, Ser 4317248, sw 6.60 and is attached to a Polar Pro chest strap and the one used on the runs I’ve posted links to.
The second is model #1752, Ser 6642966, sw 6.60 and still attached to its original Garmin strap. I’ve just tested it walking around the garden, with Run app recording, gently bouncing (not to aggravate said injury) to get the RD data and I’m still getting the RD data showing on the RD data screens 5 minutes after starting recording.

So both HRM Runs are working for me, which is why I’m bemused why others are having an issue. One thing perhaps to check is that you are all on the same component software versions on your 5+ units (Settings>About). Mine are:

    Software version 3.10
    GPS 2.20
    Wi-Fi 2.50
    CIQ 2.4.5
    WHR 20.03.32
    ANT/BLE/BT 2.80
    Sensor Hub 2.10
(the last 2 are probably the critical ones)

    My 5X Plus:
    Software version 3.10
    GPS 2.20
    Wi-Fi 2.50
    CIQ 2.4.5
    WHR 20.03.32
    ANT/BLE/BT 2.80

    2gr8pyrs 5 Plus:
    Software Version: 3.10
    GPS: 2.20
    Wi-Fi: 2.50
    CIQ: 2.4.5

    ANT/BLE/BT: 2.80
    Sensor Hub: 2.10

I've zipped up both our GARMIN folders (sans maps) and sent them off to the mothership.
  • I got a new F5x plus and HRM-TRI today. I didn't have time to go outside, but I did 30 minutes on an elliptical. The TRI lost connection to the watch every couple minutes when I was moving my arms or held them by my side. I took off the watch and put it on the elliptical tray about 12 inches in front of me, and it kept a steady connection. The track shows heart rate low or zero when it lost connection. It was steady the last 10 minutes with the watch in front of me. The watch indicates the TRI battery condition is "ok". I was using the built-in elliptical activity. Watch is firmware is 3.10.0.0.
