Descent MK1 First 24 hours - Impressions and Issues

So i received my shiny new device on Monday afternoon so wanted to share some first impressions.

First the positives:
- It’s light, looks very well made and is quite beautiful in terms of finish (I have the DLC titanium edition)
- The titanium band is very easy to adjust with screwed in link pins rather than push out so capsule be adjusted you most
- The screen is a big step up from the 3HR as is the performance
- GPS lock is faster than the 3HR and tracking looks about the same. I’m yet to try Glonass

Now initial frustrations
- On my one and only run I lost RD metrics half way through. I was using a HRM-Run (version 1) with up to date firmware and good battery. HR remained throughout (it was -2c so was wearing the watch over my jersey so no optical HR)
- My vectors do not seem fully supported. I can’t turn cycling dynamics off and on. I can do this with my Edge 1030 but don’t understabd when not supported yet
- Running power is not supported. Not sure why this is given it meets all the requirements

  • Do you have the All Day Stress widget on fw2.30? Its not on 2.2 so would be interested to know.
RayMaker is also checking plans for this with Garmin (he confirmed that they are planning to release running power for the MK1 this morning).
  • No, no All Day Stress widget on my Descent v2.30!
  • I had mine MK1 now since one week, it´s really a nice watch. But my battery drain is much higher per activity as my FR935 or Fenix. With this watches i had a drain like 8-9% per hour, with the Mk1 i had nearly 15-16%.....that´s frustrating!

And where i can get the FW 2.30????

    Best regards
    Olly

Do you have a custom watch face? I had tried a few and noticed for whatever reason I had a faster drain on my battery. Your watch should not be draining that quickly. If you don’t have a downloaded watch face, try resetting the watch and clearing everything back to the beginning and see if you still have the drain. It’s just a matter of eliminating possible problems.

My MK1 drains about 5-9% per day.
  • CIQ has to be 2.4.x to get Running Power I believe.
  • Yes, running power requires 2.4.x CIQ. I was a little surprised to see it still on 2.3.x but I'd expect an update soon, and then run power should be supported.
  • Just received my second Descent, first unit had a defective depth sensor. I had a chance to use it in the pool with a class I was teaching Friday evening, then in the ocean for two dives on Saturday. While I love having a full featured dive computer and all the functionality of my Fenix watch in one, I have a few comments/concerns about the Descent.

    - The Descent never calculated my NDL, turns out you must plan the dive in Plan Mode to get the Descent to calc your NDL. If you do not use Plan Mode the Descent will just display --:-- for NDL the entire dive. I understand the logic of using plan mode, but this is a safety issue and could result in a diver going into Deco and not knowing this until they have exceeded their NDL. I suspect that their are a lot of divers who do not use Plan Mode on a regular basis, especially on dive sites they dive on a regular basis. There is no mention of this in the documentation.
    - Safety Stop timer does not appear to start until you hit 15 feet, maybe having this time start at 20 feet would be a bit more flexible. We tell students to always do a 3 minute safety stop at 15 feet, but it is not always possible to get everyone at 15 feet at the same time. In the real world 15-20 feet is probably more realistic.
    - Buttons are easy to operate with gloves on, but I found that even mounted up closer to my elbow above my Shearwater Perdix, my drysuit would sometimes press the buttons when I moved my arm around.

As a dive instructor I could not in good conscience recommend the Descent to a student as their primary dive computer until Garmin addresses the display of the NDL. I understand this is how they designed the computer to operate, but I view this a safety issue that could get a diver injured or killed. Now I love having all the functionality of the Fenix and a full feature dive computer, but this is and will remain my back up dive computer.

I too am a Dive Instructor and I find this information a bit concerning as a student or diver with any other dive computer, the NDL is calculated based on the algorithm being used and the depth obtained by the diver and then using the “plan dive” part of the computer features to figure out their repetitive dive based on their previous dive or dives.

I’m teaching tonight but won’t be able to extensively use it since I’ll just be in a shallow pool. My first real dive won’t come until April on vacation.

I am teaching an Open Water this weekend, and will test it out again in the pool.
  • Not that there was any doubt in what Mark said but I was teaching tonight and had a chance to test out some the diving features. While it was nice touch with the vibration alerts and the countdowns to when the dive was going to end, it’s VERY disconcerting that the NDL does not work based on the depth. Nothing showing up is huge liability for Garmin.

I don’t understand how this wasn’t caught during beta testing.

Hello. Can you give some more details about dive (max deep, dive time, etc.) Thanks
Can you ad a photos with summary of dive?
