problem with receiving sms

Good morning all,
best wishes for users of Inreach products...
I have a problem with the reception of the sms that I send from a Mini 2, I specify that I have two models and that I have the same problem with both...
with my old Mini 1, there was no problem with receiving sms, I sent pre-recorded sms from the Mini 1 directly or from Explore,
with the Mini 2 at the beginning, I proceeded in the same way, I coupled my Mini 2 with my Montana 700 and my S22 Ultra, I could use the M700 for a fast sending of pre-recorded messages or a new sms, I found the conversation in Explore on my S22U, but Garmin made several updates and they introduced Messenger,
we can therefore send sms from: Explore, Messenger, from my M700 or from the Mini 2, it's starting to get complicated...
wanting to make it simple and possibly be able to lend my M700 and the Mini 2 without having to load applications on a third-party smartphone, I thought it would work but since that day, I realized that I could no longer receive text messages on a basic phone which would not have the Explore or Messenger app,
I hope that Garmin is not going to impose one of these applications "just" to receive sms, it was easy to receive them, fast sending even from the Mini 2 and reception directly in the sms application of the telephone concerned, sms to which or could respond directly, going through an application would complicate sending, since Messenger duplicates the application installed on the smartphone.
another problem too, I realized that on the M700, I could no longer send new sms because if I press "new sms" it switches to the list of contacts that I have synchronized with Explore, if I don't I can't use Explore, I can only send an sms with the contacts present,
before by pressing "new message", the keyboard appeared which then allowed to type a number which would not be in the list synchronized with Explore previously.
it's getting complicated to be able to find your way around, it was simple before...
Thank you to anyone who can help me with these various issues I'm having.
for the problem of making the keyboard appear on "new messages" the Garmin after-sales service that I contacted did not give me an answer, they did not know where the problem came from, apart from resetting the M700, they did not had no other answer...and again no guarantee of result.

  • Welcome to phone number hijacking. What happens here is that SMS messages from the Garmin ecosystem are delivered via cellular data (only) to the Messenger app. They are not actually sent into the cellular network AS SMS. This SHOULD only happen with SMS messages originating in the Garmin ecosystem. At least, that's the way I understand it. Could be wrong because this "feature" is not well documented AFAIK.

It IS possible to disassociate the number from the messenger and the app. I don't remember how. BUT if you do this, I believe you sacrifice at least some of the group messaging functionality which relies on the app.

  • I hope I will find the instruction how to do it. No need for the group messeging anyway.

I just think about our team in the EQ region, being possibly equiped with messenger devices and the app being installed on their phones and they can not message each other or the base of operation can not send them a message, just because their phones have roaming for the phone servcie but have no data package for the region.

This is probably no issue in your place, phone from one end of the continent will work at other end. But in the rest of the world, data roaming exists with data packages to be bought in advance.

OK, we do not employ any of the new things in the field, might keep going so .

  • Here are the instructions. I doubt that it’s actually necessary to uninstall and reinstall the app to do this. The whole article is backhanded. Because you really LIKE having your number hijacked, right? /rant

What functionality of the Messenger app do you really need, that Explore app cannot provide?

  • Hello everyone,
thank you TWOLPERT for this information, I'm going to test, it makes a nice mix of all these ways of sending/receiving messages, why Garmin hasn't improved the Explore app rather than creating other apps that do the same job ?
on the other hand, still no update on my Montana 700 so that I can send a message to a new contact number without being synchronized with my phone, no phone, no possibility of adding a new contact, it was so simple before, okay it is possible to make mistakes when introducing a new contact, but the fact of wanting everything to synchronize all the devices complicates the use which was basic at the start, I liked Earthmate, not need to create new applications that only complicate and risk one day not working properly...

  • what I'm looking for is not to multiply the applications to install on my phone,
if nothing is installed, no possibility to lend my Mini 2 for example, as I explain in my previous message, before the introduction of new applications, I could ONLY use my Montana 700 and the Mini 1, now you have to install all the applications, AND above all always have a phone at hand...

  • What functionality of the Messenger app do you really need, that Explore app cannot provide?

That is really a good question! What is the real benefit for a mini 2 user to use the messenger app? Only group messaging? Via the Explore app you can send/receive messages and weather with mini 2, add/sync waypoints to the mini 2...

  • it's very well summarized, why multiply the applications and not have only one but which is complete, I think that someone who only uses an Inreach occasionally or does not have a good command of the applications will be a little lost  , even a lot, there must still be a way to improve Explore without creating Messenger in addition?

  • thanks twolpert

clearly this is not a solution, as we were thinking of using in our rapid response teams and this makes it all useless. To delete the account each time one may expect to receive a message from other ir device is just a pathetic joke of Garmin.

I did describe the problem to support, will see what they answer.

    I am very curious (but I fear/bet...)
