SMS sending problem - Germany - Provider O2

I just bought an Garmin Inreach Explorer+, was testing the functionality and had a lot of problems sending SMS to a number from Germany - Provider O2.
Out of 10 SMS only 5 are dispatched, and if, you could not answer via SMS on you mobile, like I can normally with a provider from Austria.

And there is no information on the Garmin Inreach Explorer, that the SMS did not work!

Could someone please help me.

  • I think you're going to have to take this one up with tech support. Even they may not be able to do much about this one. Garmin uses a variety of SMS gateways, depending on the location of the target number. There are a lot of moving parts involved in getting your message from the inReach device to the recipient's phone. The problem could be anywhere along the line.

    AFAIK, there is no reverse feedback path from the recipient's cell network. As a result, you can never tell whether or not an SMS was actually delivered, let alone read. Best you can do is to check your Inbox at inreach.garmin.com. If you find the message there, you can be sure that it made it from the inReach to the Garmin servers. Beyond that, you can't tell anything at all.

    I have some very vague recollection that the capabilities of the various SMS gateways vary. It's possible that this particular combination of gateway/cell network does not support reply via the recipient's phone. In order for that to work, the Garmin servers must know the number from which the gateway "sent" the SMS - which is the number to which the recipient would "reply". And the gateway has to pass any reply back to the Garmin servers for transmission to your inReach. I could be wrong (I'm reaching way back here), but I seem to recall that not all gateways support this.

    Either way, your best bet is get in touch with tech support.
