Question about 9.50 update

The list just posted of improvements in ver. 9.50 looks good.  What does, "Added support for upgrading from inReach Presets to Check-Ins," mean?

  • If you download the Messenger app, and you have Preset Messages, you will see under "Device", "Presets". If you tap "Presets", you will see "Set up Check In". If you tap that you have the option to use check in messages instead of preset messages.

You do NOT want to do this. Preset messages provide more flexibility than check in messages.

  • You do NOT want to do this. Preset messages provide more flexibility than check in messages.

    This is 100% correct.

This is not an upgrade, it is a downgrade and reduces device capabilities, irreversibly.

  • Can you expand on that? I don’t understand your post. The explore website allows you to use both  three check-in msgs and all the preset msgs you want. When sending a msg with the 66i (no smartphone involved, you have choice of either or creating a new msg. As long as you have Internet, I think you can change presets or check-ins as much as you want on your Explore website.

  • The first question is, are you a new or old subscriber...ie, did you first subscribe to inReach before (old) or after (new) about September, 2022? If you are an old subscriber you have custom texts, quick texts, preset messages and SOS messaging. New subscribers don't have preset messages, they have check in messages, but otherwise have the same functionality.

If you are an old subscriber and have completed this software update, you can now"upgrade" from preset messages to check in messages as I described above.

But the "upgrade" is actually a downgrade...preset messages offer more flexibility than check in messages. Preset messages can be customized by the user, but check in messages cannot.

  • In addition, I believe that all 3 check-in messages go to the same set of recipients. The last time I looked, the Explore web site makes it LOOK as if you can have a separate recipient list for each message. But when you changed one of them, they all changed. If still true, this is another shortcoming of the whole "upgrade".

  • Thanks, Like2Hike.  That explains a lot.  But not everything.  I am an old subscriber.  I predated Garmin's acquisition of InReach.

First question, How would and old user execute the switch?  I don't see such an option on my 66i ver. 9.50.

Second question: How does this relate to rate structure.  Some subscription plans allow unlimited "Check-In" (new Garmin name for "preset") messages but charge the regular message fee for the "Quick-Text" messages.

(I assume from other posts here that you can now edit "Quick-Text" messages in the field without Internet access and that "Check-In" messages cannot be edited in the field.)

  • twolpert, that's not the case on my account.  I can specify on my explore.garmin.com web page whom my three "Check-in" (previously called "preset") messages go to.

  • Yes, you can change the recipients. No, you CANNOT have a different recipient list for each of the three messages.

If you edit the list for any ONE of the messages, the same list automatically appears for the other two.

  • Thanks twolpert.  One of my three "Check-In" messages has different addresses than the other two.  And my explore.garmin.com account allows me to specify the addresses individually for each.
