Profiles only contain some of the settings. AFAIK, there is no comprehensive list of what is in the profile and what is not. It is entirely possible that units of measure are not in the profiles.
In any case, you the user have no control. All you can do is set the value, change profiles, and see what happens. So you can't really do anything wrong.
If units of measure are not in the profile, you can submit an enhancement request here:
Thank you for fast answer twolpert...I' m totally agree with your answer & my effort stay in vain trying to configure my profile unit measure....but take a look at what garmin said about it at page 41 of their manual:
Profiles
Profiles are a collection of settings that optimize your device based on how you are using it. For example, the settings and views are different when you use the device for hunting than when geocaching.
Profiles are associated with the activity screens, including the home screen.
When you are using a profile and you change settings, such as data fields or units of measurement, the changes are saved automatically as part of the profile.
It's the reason why I'm confuse about it,,, & this option will be really helpful for my personal application !!
Let's improve my friend
Garmin have been slowly reducing the number of settings that are profile dependent. The units of measure used to be profile dependent, but sadly no longer is. Please call and email Garmin support to request the change it back!
Thank for the info atlas_cached,,I will stop losing my time trying to figure it all, I will use the link from twolpert to make a request to Garmin, Still thinking this feature is a save time option when you change your Activity!!
Let's see ...
I did submit this request already, in my opinion, the units needs to be part of the profile.
Currently, it is set by the initial selection of language. If I set initially german, the units will become metric, when I select initially english, the units become imperial.
Subsequent change of language will however not change the units setting, neither will the setting be stored in the profile.
I have to use english language on our devices, but units needs to be metric.
During the setup, I first select german as language. Then I change it to english and the metric setting remains.
Thereafter I import my profile.
BTW you can easy find out what ist in the profile, the profile is readable by any text editor.
You can also edit values directly in the text, then copy it to the profile folder and all will work.
I ran into the same problem with my relatively new GPSmap 86s and I cannot fully agree with you. I think it is a bug or Garmin removed this from the profile unintentionally. Why else would talk at least the german manual for the 86s exactly about "unit measurement" settings when trying to explain the principles behind profiles and why one would use different profiles with different activities.
So either the Bug is in the software or in the manual!
Sorry for my english, I am an Austrian und normally speak german.
Regards Johannes
Its OK, we understand you anyway
The current functionality with 66i, and this is the only one I can use now, is that measuremnts units are not stored in the profile. Definitely not. Everybody can read the profile, it is human readable text.
The measurement units are more coupled to the language you select when setting up the device initially or after factory reset.
Clearly, you can change the units later, no problem, but this will not be stored in a profile, even if you create new profile then. Profile can be created, then exported to PC let say and next time you set the unit up you can copy the profile back and select 'use' and the settings will be applied. This will not do any changes to the measurements units, nor it will restore information abt 12h/24h time display etc.
I have ben struggling with it for long time, I have even mentioned this to Garmin in some reports and they did confirm that this is simply so and there are currently no plans to change anything.
So either you set up your device with the aid of profile and then make corrections to units or you can choose a language initially which will automatically set the units 'to the language'
This was difficult on my side, as I have to have 66i speaking english language (mandatory by my organization) but need metric units and 24h time.
Now I am solving it by setting the language to german initially, this will set metric units and 24h time, and then change the language to english which will not attempt to change the settings done.
If I would select english from begining, the units would be set basically to imperial, time to 12h/am/pm etc.
possibly old manual?
apparently it was in profile in the past, but this is not any more.
Check your profile and let us know wif you find any traces of units setting there, with 66i I definitely did not find anything
Hi skyeye!
I understand your situation and it looks like you have found a solution.
My situation is different. I use the 86s when I make a tour with the bike but also when I am sailing on the Mediterranian See. That means I need metric units when biking and nautical units when sailing. With my old 62s this works perfect - switching profile, all settings are correct - DONE. Now with 86s I have to switch the profile and have to take care not to forget to change the units setting. When switching to City-Navigation (to drive home from a sailing törn) again I have to switch profile AND units setting.
Additionally I ask myself what are the next items removed from profile by garmin?
And as I already wrote the 86s manual includes a description where they use "unit setting" as an example why someone should use different profiles. And this manual is the latest available german manual.
So, for me this is clearly a bug: A function described within the manual does NOT work.
I tried to find a possibility on the garmin web pages where I could report a bug - I could not find this.
Thank You for your interest and support
Johannes
