  • Foretrex 401 heart rate on Garmin Connect

While using my Foretrex 401 I can see my heart rate, but once it is downloaded to my "activities" the graph of heart rate doesn't show up.
It says there is no data.
The altitude and speed both show on the graphs but not heart rate.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong.

I recently purchased a Dakota 20 to use on multiday hikes and wanted HR functionality. I don't know if the ForeTrex works the same way or not. The HR data is in the tcx file on the device. When you connect to Garmin Connect the HR data is not uploaded (I don't know why). This happened with my Dakota 20. Instead of uploading from the device, select to upload from a file then select the file on your device. When I uploaded my Dakota 20 file this way the HR data showed up here http://connect.garmin.com/activity/25886979.

I called Garmin and they told me to return the unit. The new unit does the same thing.
          No HR in Garmin Connect.
          Not Happy.

Where is the heart rate shown?

I just received the 401 as a gift today with the heart rate monitor. It says connected but I don't see where it shows my heart rate....and I was sweating enough for it to be making contact.

I see altitude, and mph has its own screen but nothing about heart rate.

I haven't loaded the cd yet or hooked it to my computer...is it a setting I have to do there?

Thanks for any help....and sorry for the threadjack.

Yes, I have the same problem I have just bought a HR Monitor, it sync'd up with the foretrex 401 unit that I have ok, but I am not seeing any information when I upload the details to Garmin connect.

Just found some more information on this, apparently because the foretrex 401 is not one of Garmins "active sport products", you can display your heartrate on the 401, but not upload the data to Garmin Connect. So in other words, it will only let you upload the data if you are using a forerunner etc. Great!! just wasted 29 pounds on this!

                I got this information from

Where in Garmin Connect can I find the option to "upload from a file"?

                    Manual File upload

Here is your answer and I have included a couple of screenshots.

The upload button is on the right at the top.

Then at the bottom select Manual Upload. From there you will be able to select a file to upload. This works with any gpx file, I can upload my Suunto X10 files onto Garmin Connect if I like once they are saved into gpx. My Oregon 450 will parse the HR data into the file if uploaded this way. A direct connection to Garmin Connect will not upload the HR data.

Hey thanks very much! Feel like a bit of a dud for missing the link below the buttons... Thanks for the screen shots!! I will try it tomorrow!

                          Heart Rate in Garmin Connect

Yup it works for me! Brilliant, thank you very much. My 405cx battery dies after 11 months (only get 30 mins) so I upgraded the firmware on my 401 which allowed the Heartrate sensor to work but I could never get it to show the heartrate in the Garmin Connect website....

So yes I can confirm if you manually upload the "curent.gpx" file it works just fine...

You need to set one of the customizable fields on the information page to show heart rate. Just push enter on the info page (the one that gives you all the stats) and then choose "change fields". move to a field you don't need and push "enter". Now you can scroll through and select heartrate. That field will then show your heartrate...

Thanks for the info on this, I am seriously considering getting one, the battery life is great and having the HR show in Garmin Connect is great. The 401 is quite a bit smaller than my Oregon 450 so this should work nicely for my trail running in the mountains this next summer. I am also glad I could help getting the HR data uploaded. Seems strange to me that Garmin has not implemented this properly but at least there is a workaround.
