  • How do you format an SD card in order to load custom maps?

    Just ordered an 8GB micro SD card so that I can try out a few OSM maps, but I was wondering how to format the card so that the file structure is correct for copying maps to it? Can this be done by the 810 itself, or would I have to format the card using a PC, create the file structure manually and copy the files over?

    The card should already come formatted as FAT32 and that'll work.
    nuvi 1490T (6.30) + 32GB microSDHC card & ecoRoute HD, Oregon 600 (5.00) + 32GB microSDHC card & tempe, GPSmap 76CSx (4.00) + 32GB microSDHC card, GPS V (2.60), GPS 12XL (2.02)

    This is a user-to-user forum. I am not, and never have been, a Garmin employee. My opinions are my own.

      Ok, thanks.

      Can I just dump the map image file into the root of the SD card or do I need to create any sub-folders? Also, can I put more than one map on the SD card?

        Is the "map image" a .img file? If so it goes in a \Garmin or \Map folder on the card (not sure which but hopefully a 810 owner can confirm).

        Most newer models can support multiple .img files. Just put them in the correct folder as above.

          Yes, they are .img files from the talkytoaster.co.uk website. Hopefully I'll be able to install multiple files, that's the aim anyway.

          Can an 810 user confirm this and its location please?

            BTW you can determine the location for yourself if you wish.

            Copy the GarminDevice.xml file from the \Garmin folder on your 810. Open the file in a text editor (e.g. on Windows you can use NotePad) and search for "SupplementalMaps". Then look for the <path>they go here</path> text.

            Code:
                        <Name>SupplementalMaps</Name>
                        <File>
                            <Specification>
                                <Identifier>IMG</Identifier>
                            </Specification>
                            <Location>
                                <Path>Map</Path>
                                <BaseName>gmapsupp</BaseName>
                                <FileExtension>img</FileExtension>
                            </Location>
                            <TransferDirection>InputOutput</TransferDirection>
                        </File>

                BTW which was the correct folder name? Someone might find that useful.

                  Hi,

                  The path is simply the 'Garmin' folder by the looks of it.

                  Code:
                  <Name>SupplementalMaps</Name>
                  <File>
                        <Specification>
                             <Identifier>IMG</Identifier>
                        </Specification>
                        <Location>
                             <Path>Garmin</Path>
                             <BaseName>gmapsupp</BaseName>
                             <FileExtension>img</FileExtension>
                  </Location>
                  <TransferDirection>InputOutput</TransferDirection></File>
                  Edit: Does this mean that I need to create the folder names 'Garmin' on my blank SD card or will the device do it for me?
