BaseCamp duplicates

Using Garmin Basecamp for fishing waypoints. "My Collection" has ended up 8 duplicates of each spot with one letter or number different in the name. It got this way cause when I would go on a trip I had to reload the new spots making a new copy with duplicates. Anyway to quickly remove all the duplicates? It would be next to impossible to do manually...its 8000 or so waypoints.

  • Not sure why you needed to reload the new spots every time you went on a trip, you need to resolve that first as it shouldn't be necessary, although I'm not clear what you mean by reload?

I presume all these waypoints (1000 of them?) are on a device, so just clear the BaseCamp data and then copy the 1000 or so from your device.

  • I have 10k waypoints in basecamp from a number of files that make up "My collection". My entire collection will not fit in the Garmin chartplotter at one time. So I have to take a section (the area we are going fishing) and make a file to bring on boat. During the trip 20 or so new waypoints may be added to the list so that file is taken off the chartplotter (with the new spots) and put back into "My Collections" on basecamp. That was the only way I found to make sure they were not lost. Now the file brought back made doubles of everything, but has the new spots from the trip in "My collection". Next trip to another section of "My Collection".... each trip all data is taken off the chartplotter and new spots added and back into "My Collection" now I have 10 or so doubles of everything, but have the new spots.. Yes, a horrible work around. The other annoying part is tracks and routes can not move back and forth in and out of chartplotter and basecamp files so each time I have to delete tracks and routes to move files around. At this point I need help getting all the doubles out. is there a way to get all raw data out of Basecamp to a spreadsheet and move back in after removing all the doubles and what is a better software that will allow you to take sections of waypoints and bring back back after a trip with only the new spots to keep as a "master" sort of speak.

  • Going forward all I can suggest is to take the selection that you want for fishing, save that to your device then delete that selection from BaseCamp. On return send whatever is on your chartplotter to BaseCamp, that would avoid duplicates being created.

As to all the duplicates you now have I know of no way to do what you want, hopefully others may be able to help.

  • You can use GPSBabel to remove duplicates from a GPX file.     You can then create a NEW Basecamp database by importing the fixed GPX file.  I tried this on a small set of data and it worked great.  Not sure if it will choke on 10000 waypoints but you can try.

  • As and added note,  Remove Duplicates is the only FILTER in GPSBabel that does not require you to use the command line.  I used the command line too but the GPSBabel App makes it a LOT simpler.
