Inconsistency with Active Calories on the Reports section

I noticed yesterday that the Garmin calorie adjustment on MFP looked too high, so I checked the reports section of the Garmin connect website and there is an inconsistency between Active Calories.

If I look at the "All Activities" section then I see:

- Active Calories for Weds 14th Jan = 736 total ( 150 walking, 586 cycling )

- Total Calories for Weds 14th Jan = 1951 BMI + 864 active.

This is a differential of 128, and it appears the higher number is the one sent to MFP.

If I look at other days there are also inconsistencies, in fact for Tuesday 13th the disparity is over 300!

Is anyone else seeing this? Anyone know the reason behind this or if it is a bug? If it isn't correct its a massive problem for MFP users as it will mislead us in terms of calories burned etc.....

Thanks,
Paul
  • Thanks for the feedback!

I decided to test my theory by recording 2 activities today with activity tracking temporarily disabled on the watch. And lo and behold my MFP adjustment looks just right as a result. Tomorrow I will do a long run with steps disabled and am confident I won't see unexpected MFP adjustment calories. I will report back!

Re the watch calorie counts that include BMR they are correct as of midnight each day as the watch stores them along with step data in its history for the past few days.

That's really quite interesting. So they sorted it out when you are using two separate devices but dropped the ball when they put both capabilities in one. Keep posting your results here as it would appear that they are watching this thread.

It is also interesting that your watch is storing activity data for prior days. Neither of the Vivo's do that. The bands only know about the 24 hour period you are currently in.

To be clear, I'm thinking we have identified two different and unrelated problems here. Problem #1, identified by you is that, in combo activity tracking/sport devices you are getting calorie credit for steps taken during a recorded activity—not on the device itself but in GC after the device uploads. Problem #2, which has been around since the Vivofit and Garmin Connect Modern were introduced, is simply that the walking portion of Active Calories is simply wrong.

Have there been any days since you got your 920 that you have not recorded a single activity? If so, on those days, does the total calorie expenditure on the watch and in GC agree? Exactly?

There is an oddity in the way Garmin has chosen to do things that most people do not get probably because it is irrational. 1) The tick tick tick of your BMI is tallied in the Vivo—not in Garmin Connect. If you don't sync your Vivo, you don't accumulate BMI. 2) When you sync your Vivo, it does not update itself with your current weight. This is why your BMI never changes in the Total Calories report even though your weight does. To make your BMI change, you have to go into Settings > Personal Information where you will find your weight to be correct as of the last time you, MFP, or Withings updated it BUT you also have to click on the Send to Device link on that page to tell your Band your weight has changed so it can begin accruing BMR based on your new weight. I know. It's insane. I would be very curious to know if this insanity has carried over into the 920/fenix 3/FR15. Paul, can you speak to the 920? Jim to the FR15?
  • Thanks again.

Sunday no activities recorded and just 379 steps......( I wore my other 'normal' watch ). Calories match exactly between watch history and GC.

In terms of BMR its changed about 3 times since I got the watch at Xmas despite my weight moving almost daily via the MFP link. Looking at the history I am guessing that has coincided with software updates? Certainly not reacting to my weigh ins which are daily and have fluctuated by around 1kg in the last week alone.

Another puzzle. You never used this link?

    " />">

And you never changed your weight directly on the 920?

You see it is a puzzle because, if the answer to both of those questions is no, you BMI should NEVER have changed.

Hi Paul. Thought you would like to know you are not alone: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/01/garmin-fenix3-firstlook.html#comment-1156832. I emailed GC support about this issue too this morning . . . just to be sure that they are aware of and paying attention to both problems.
  • Hi Frank,

No I never knew about that link! Possibly I changed my weight on the 920 via the connect interface.......but cant be sure.

Anyway, so I did a marathon training run this morning, 29km, and totally forgot to disable the step tracking. Sigh.

However, for the first time after such a run, my MFP adjustment doesnt appear to include rogue calories. Could Garmin have applied some sort of fix I wonder? Active calories on the reports widget does include 472 walking which are clearly from the running steps.

Many thanks for the input on this :-)

Anything is possible but I kind of doubt it. Please keep an eye out for daily total calorie differences between your watch and GC and keep us informed. Garmin is not always great about telling us they fixed something as that would require admission that it was ever broken to begin with.

If I hear anything, I will post it here.

That link is in the Connect Interface. If you didn't use it, your weight should not have changed unless you put it directly into the watch. I would like to think the 920 is just smarter than the Vivos that way but, if that were true, your BMI would have changed every time your weight did . . . from what you say nearly every day. In my case, I am currently putting my weight into GCM manually and it syncs with MFP. When I'm at my other house, my Withings scale feeds my weight to MFP which syncs it up to Garmin.

So, even though my weight automagically updates itself on Garmin and MFP no matter where or how I enter it, unless I hit that link, my BMI never changes. It is less clear to me what happens if you change your weight on the mobile app. I can tell you that every time I change my weight on the mobile app (iOS) it immediately syncs with my Vivo so maybe that is the answer.
  • Btw I got a reply from Garmin about this.....make of it what you will, I know what I think!

  • Frank the calorie count today's MFP adjustment is based on is out of sync with the watch today, as in about 200 larger. But so far the adjustment less than usual in these circumstances. Who knows? Most of my runs are between 10 and 16km so perhaps the large one today plays a part in this.....just speculating....and of course it could look different later in the day ;-)

    920xt Step Calorie Duplication Problem

    Who knows? ;-)

I've never tried to evaluate a day that was still in progress. Too many moving parts and too many different people moving them.

I did hear back from Garmin on your 920xt issue though. This is what they had to say:

Edit from Admin: Removing offending text that is against the TOS.

Just kidding. I have not heard from them yet. But I was inspired to write this spoof based on their response to you. They frequently confuse bug reports with feature requests and suggest their suggestion box. As far as I can tell, that is just a bottomless bit pit.
