GPX Activities uploaded no longer have length/distance

Former Member
Former Member
Since the Garmin Connect website downtime yesterday (12/19/14), GPX file uploaded as activities no longer interpret the correct mileage length, or associated calculations. Time and elevation appear to be known, but not distance.

Anyone else see this?

Thanks
  • Distance bug in GC affecting user community for almost two weeks now.

Any news on this perhaps Garmin?
  • Hi,

Same issue here in France. Here is my setup:

Hardware: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (4.4.4) + Garmin Ant+ sensors (HR, footpod and bike speed cadence:010-12102-00)
Software: Sportstracklive pro 5.03 for Android
I don't use Garmin Fit because it does not recognize the new bike speed cadence (shame on you Garmin !)

The tour is recorded and uploaded to the Sportstrackerlive platform. Then I perform a gpx export from the web interface of Sportstrackerlive. Finally I upload this gpx file to Garmin connect. This was working smoothly until last week ! The distances seem to be divided by 1000. I have tried some softwares like GPSbabel in order to control and/or fix the gpx file. No way, the problem remains ! Finally I was very surprised to see that Garmin basecamp for windows has no problem for handling the GPX file. It reads correctly the distance. For me it is 100% OBVIOUS tha the problem is comming from Garmin Connect software. Garmin, you have to fix this ASAP !

    Please see this example:

I have downloaded (gpx export from sportstracklive.com) a concerned tour and uploaded it on my Garmin Connect account. Here is an example of a 83 kms tour:

    Best regards

PS: Why Garmin hasn't perform any update of the Garmin Fit Android application ? The latest version (1.7) is outdated ! Nov 20th 2013

Same problem with uploading gpx-files from the Garmin Oregon450t here. Works fine on Strava, not on Garmin Connect. Editing for corrections gives problems too, something is wrong indeed! Please Garmin, fix this asap!!

On my Oregon 550, the heartrate, time and track shows up accurately on map. The distance, calories and speed (avg and max) does not work.
I use Portuguese language and my device as the latest version available.
In my case the gpx file is fine, as it works both in Garmin MapSource and sports-tracker with all the right information shown.
    Can anyone help ?
  • Hi all!

I have exactly the same problem that all of you: the distance value is twisted... I ran 21 kilometers, 10 km. and other distances like those and all of them are showed at garmin connect as the real distance divided between 1000 (0,02 km., 0,01 km., etc.).

My Garmin Etrex 30 device recorded all correctly, BaseCamp the same way, all right, but when I upload it to Garmin Connect the distance and all the measures calculated from the distance (speed, pace, etc.) get wrong.

The conclusion I get after reading all your posts is that THE PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH THE USERS OF GPS DEVICES CONCEIVED FOR MOUNTAINEERING. They probably want us to buy a GPS for hiking, another one for running, other for cycling and another one for going to the bathroom... Why? It is not only this problem (it could be only a bug), the reason is that we can not even upload directly tracks from GPS device to GarminConnect without extracting the .gpx file with BaseCamp and uploading it manually. All the other users upload it only connecting his device and syncing it with GarminExpress. As easy at that... But oh, bad luck, GarminExpress is not compatible with Etrex or other mountaineering devices...

A mate of mine have the same problem (etrex30, distance wrong, only with GarminConnect).

I'm not buying other GPS until it breaks, but when it will do, the next one will not be a Garmin.
  • Connect is really aimed at fitness devices, you'd be better off using Basecamp for your Etrex. If you must use your Etrex with Connect then you have to accept it doesn't automatically sync. Whether that is intended for the future I don't know.

Your comment 'Garmin Express is not compatible with Etrex or mountaineering devices' (which I assume means handhelds) is wrong ... Express works with pretty much every Garmin GPS.
  • xD
yeah, it could be wrong written down that way. I give you that for the moment. I meant that when uploading automatically tracks, it is programmed in a way that discriminate between handhelds devices and fitness ones.

But now, please, the important thing: what is happening with the distance issue? I don't know if as a moderator you have that function, let me know if not, please, but could you contact with someone who can solve it?

    Thank you.

Ok, thank you. I have already written to the Spanish SAT about a week ago and I'm still waiting... Could be cool that someone within the US call to that free cost number to inform them...

I have contacted product support 4 days ago and received no reply. Other people earlier in this thread have also stated that they have contacted product support with no response. It seems a bit ungrateful to complain too bitterly about a free service, but ths complete silence on the part of Garmin does not reflect very well on the company.
