Cycling Segments

Using a Edge 500.

I've created a few segments that are in my usual route and it logs my time through these segments but on the leader board there are about 26 other people that have posted times but my name doesn't show up, only when I select "Me Only" do all my times show in a table. Plus when I look at my ride with all the info it shows me passing through my segments with the time but next to it is a little yellow icon that says "null" and a explanation of my time says "This ride put you on a overall rank of null"

So why isn't my time been put on the leader board? I've tried every setting possible to no avail. Also I cant even delete segments that I have created.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
  • Still can't see my rides

Sorry guys if I seem to be asking the same question already asked but I am new to my Edge 810 and have lots of doubts floating on my head..

Do I need to download segments to the unit or at least save them as favorites in Garmin Connect to be able to see my ride in those particular segments??? I have ridden on many existing segments but I never find my ride in the leaderboard. I have checked the participation box and unlocked all my activities in the settings, but can't see a thing

Previously all my activities were locked so I unlocked one by one and checked the leaderboard box in my settings, does Garmin Connect push all my previous activities to the leaderboard or just the ones I upload after I have corrected the settings as described above?

I do not think you can download Segments to the 810 (yet).
My Segment times took a bit to show up in the Garmin Connect Leaderboards. I have seen times dating back to 2013. I think there is a process running in the back adding times to Segments that's why it takes sometime to show up.

It only seems to work when you have 'Participate in leaderboards' ON as well as making the activity containing the segment public to everyone. If the activity is on connections only or private the position shows as null.

I've done that and it still doesn't show up...whenever I go into a segment that I've made public it keeps on saying I have to Opt-in for leaderboards!!

    Frustrating much!!
  • I just looked around the new site and in conclusion it is a disaster. Buggy, slow....even the look and feel is just not up to par with the clean look other sites are using.

    1) creating segments: Absolutely horrendous...you cannot pinpoint your start and end accurately (especially if the segment goes in 1 direction and then the other...for example if you go to a dead end and then back)...if you adjust the start or end, the whole thing just disappears...terrible.
    2) Once you save the segment, the results are not displayed (yes all the rides are public and I opted in to segments)...how did this pass testing?
    3) content is displayed in wrong places (site within a site). I was hoping Garmin would come out with something good with the quality of the original site.

Garmin, what happened? You had a chance to do something about strava, but now I am not sure its going to work. Looks like another outsource disaster.

Just throw this thing away and buy Strava. It will cost you less in the end. And whatever company you used to write this new site should be ashamed of themselves.

i've created 5 segment from my activity
in two of them i'm in the ranking...
in two of them there is written that i must activate the ranking setting (privacy)
in one of them the ranking is still creating (...after two weeks!!!!)

To create a segment, you have to open an activity and you could create "segment" in segment zone

Why is it so long ?

Why is it so long to have a result when i create a new segment (few days when it works) ?
Sometimes I have no result for my own segment i have created , how is it possible ?
I use STRAVA and it is very fast !
Garmin, when do you improve your segment ?
    Thank

I've been using Garmin Segments now for about a month.

All I can say is that - It's terrible.

In its current form and workflow, it's a mess.. STRAVA is so much easier and intuitive.

the issues that people have mentioned about start/stop points, slowness at determining segments etc. Are even more prevalent now than they were a month ago.

That to me is a problem.

I think Garmin has a great idea here, but I also think they are trying to monopolize the information and profit off of it more than being concerned about user experience, much like they do their maps and such. This I'm sure is not the case, but that's what it seems like to me, as I do not get that feeling when using STRAVA.

For now, I suggest everyone use STRAVA, and use Garmin connect as simply a back up.

    Correct.
The whole cloud-idea is all about monopolization and control.
It immediately becomes clear, if one imagines the possibility of giving the customer a normal off-line software, with the ability to sync the data, IF he wants.
We would be independent from server availability, service availability, uptime, traffic load.

Think about segments with an off-line solution:
If you prefer to stay private, you only see your personal times. But as soon as you come home and transfer the data, it is there.
And if you prefer to compare with others, then you could select to sync with the cloud.
And even better: the local data with the list on your computer would get updated.
So the next time you would import something to your local software, the list would immediately be available and if you want to update and the servers were able to handle it, it would get updated to the newest data.
This could even be made transparent and automatic.

So the customer would have a CHOICE - and a much more stable and reliable system.

And on the side of Garmin: they would not need to have server and computer capacity that has to be able to deal with peak traffic and data, it would be enough of just being able to handle the data in a certain amount of time, because people could use the service on their local computer anyway.

If one day the internet goes down (what mosr people don't know, it is NOT a distributed net, itall runs over maybe a dozen relay exchanges worldwide!), all their products become unuseable.
From the enigneer's view it's incredible that a company even accepts and freely chooses such a fragile system. With a local software solution, it would be much more resilient to disruptions.
Want to track your personal fitness? Then you need the net! What a joke.

But independence and choice is contrary to the goal of monopolization...
  • Is it possible to create a segment from scratch?
The only way I have found to create one is by pulling up one of my previous rides / maps.
I'd like to be able to create a couple segments on a course that I create but have not rode yet.
    Is this possible?
