Performance Management Charts

There is one feature that I use with other software that Garmin does not currently use which is the ability to display Training Stress Score (TSS) Chronic Training Load (CTL), Acute Training Load (ATL) and Training Stress Balance (TSB) to manage over-training and fitness levels etc. With this feature I would be able to use Garmin Connect exclusively.

As I am currently in training for my first Half Ironman event, this is possible the most important feature for me, and enables me to avoid over training injuries and change my training plans accordingly and to view my fitness peaks are peaking at the appropriate times.

These training loads are based on several different types of TSS that are customizable by the user which are:
- TSS based on normalized power for cycling
- rTSS, running TSS based on Workout time series with pace and elevation data, user threshold pace for run/walk (entered in pace/speed zones)
- sTSS, swimming TSS based on workout moving duration, distance, user threshold speed for swim (entered in speed zones)
- hrTSS, heart rate TSS, Workout time series heart rate data, user threshold heart rate (entered in heart rate zones)
- tTSS, TRIMPS Training Stress Score (tTSS) is based on average heart rate, total duration of the workout and the person's physiological heart rate properties (resting heart rate, threshold heart rate, and maximum heart rate).
  • @DerDembo: I'm not even going to dignify that with a dismissive "Nice try!"

Garmin improves firmware and adds features to Garmin Connect for its own business gain. I asked why it would be in anybody else's interests to help you save money. If you aren't looking to hand more money to Garmin, then I think you can safely assume it doesn't care whether you have a TrainingPeaks membership or not, and whether it costs you money to do so.

    Okay, I'll help out here:

Of course Garmin won't help me to save money - but they'll make sure that I'll give them my money. Not TrainingPeaks.

Let's consider step trackers as a more mature example to illustrate things for you: Why is Jawbone out of business, why is Misfit struggling, why isn't FitBit doing too well? Well it could be that people aren't into those things anymore, or everybody is using an Apple Watch. But to be honest: I don't see that many Apple Watches around - and everybody is wearing step trackers around here. But quite often the cheaper Chinese brands like Xiaomi/Mi. So what happened? Well, Apple and Google are both offering reasonable decent analytics platforms (Health) to handle your daily step counting. So clearly people will go for the cheaper alternatives when it comes to more or less identical hardware. Both Fitbit and Misfit are trying to play the fashion card, but to get back to the topic at hand that will be a hard proposition when it comes to running/triathlon watches.

So back to our example: The Chinese manufacturers aren't quite there yet, when it comes to GPS running watches, but rest assure: They will get there (they are eating Suunto's non-GPS mountaineering watches lunch with brands like Sunroad (so creative) already). So fast forward 1-2 years: We have Chinese running watches that talk perfectly fine to open analytics sites (TrainingPeaks) or sites with a larger focus on social (Strava). In fact, we are already seeing this - albeit with a premium brand - on the bike computer space: Wahoo is eating Garmin's lunch (yes, I do love my BOLT).

The only chance for Garmin to still be able to sell enough (they will always sell the Fenix series I guess) expensive hardware is, if their analytics platform, tied exclusively to their hardware remains among the best. Why do you think they just revamped the web interface and are working on a iOS update? In addition they need to make sure that we keep buying their hardware - e.g. by constantly updating and refreshing things.

So there you go. To sum things up for you:
    - it is not about you and me saving money - it is about channeling that money to Garmin
    - to stay relevant and compete against mass producible hardware you need to have an edge with your platform and your complete software package
  • Of course Garmin won't help me to save money - but they'll make sure that I'll give them my money. Not TrainingPeaks.

Great. So, to gain access to good analytics capability (as a separate expense to buying product/hardware), instead of paying TrainingPeaks for "a very expensive TrainingPeaks premium membership", you're proposing to spend roughly the same amount with Garmin additionally because Garmin can provide tighter integration on a single platform if it chooses to. The primary goal is not to reduce your total expense significantly without compromising on capability/functionality. Sure, then it makes sense that Garmin may want to offer more capability through Garmin Connect in order to pull more subscription-based revenue from its current (product) customers.

Mine surely is, Garmin's surely isn't. But unfortunately for now Garmin is in the driver seat.

Let's see whether Garmin follows your logic.

Btw, I am looking into Golden Cheetah which is a laborious but (possibly) free/cheaper solution. Or hoping that either of the three platforms

    Garmin
    Strava
    TrainingPeaks

offers a roughly complete package. So far I am paying Garmin via hardware purchases and Strava via a premium membership.

  • +1

Garmin now provides this, but you have to buy a fenix 5 series (vanilla, s,x, chronos, 935 etc) or Edge 820/1030 device. They don't have a subscription-based model for components within Garmin Connect and rely on customers buying their latest products to fund major new features like this.

For products prior to the fenix 5 series (and now some Edge models) the implementation of human performance management in Garmin Connect is pretty patchy.

There are some reporting issues in Garmin Connect with the fenix 3 that make it difficult to use even the limited data that is provided:
    - Normalized Power disappears from the widget when I view an activity
    - Training Effect doesn't show in the widget and doesn't click through to the correct report
    - Normalized Power report does not appear in the list of reports when clicking through from the widget (related to the first point)
    - Clicking through from the Normalised Power widget goes to a report that does not appear in the list of reports and contains no data
    - Training Effect data does not appear in the widget "You have no data for this time period.”
    - Training Effect click through goes to a running report instead of all activities or cycling.
    - The Training Effect report cannot show cycling and running separately on the same plot (like the V02max)

Whilst I've logged these issues with product support and the beta team, I'm not expecting them to get fixed anytime soon (they just fixed rowing distance per stroke in 8.35b - it was never right from when it was introduced in December 2015 in 6.24b).

    So...

I had a stab at implementing the performance management charts here as it can be done as a spreadsheet using an export from Garmin Connect...

...but then started investigated Golden Cheetah as it has much richer functionality.

fenix 3=>Garmin Connect=>Training peaks(automatic import)=>Golden Cheetah (manual export from TP)

Everything else works fine, except the last step is manual :(

Is there a way to automate the last step?

No idea - for me the chain stops at TrainingPeaks which I‘ve come to really like. The planning and analysis features to set different sports into relation to each other are invaluable for triathletes.
