What happened to "Moving time"?

Former Member

It appears that Garmin has removed the "Moving time" and "Moving Pace" data points. Any one know what the reason was for this latest dumb move?

And was this previously announced or was it an ad-hoc move by some intern?

Garmin Help file is still referring to these fields:

What is the difference between the various fields listed under Timing within Garmin Connect?
05/25/2011

Garmin Connect processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields:

* Moving Time: includes only the time you were moving
* Time: includes time moving and time not moving (if Auto Pause is off)
* Elapsed Time: includes time between when timer is started, stopped, and reset (includes Auto Pause or manual stoppage of the timer)

* Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity
* Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause)
* Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed throughout the duration of an activity

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

@IAMJOJO - I left a comment at the link you gave and I hope others do the same. I also wrote a message on their Facebook page and hope we can convince others to help bring it back!

@adamjowitt - I wouldn't mind if they made it even more accurate, but to totally remove it without discussion and even worse, removing past workout data and giving a solution that doesn't exist with all models is irresponsible! I'd rather they have fixed what was wrong with it or make it better than REMOVE it!

I'm an FR210 user (ie without an autopause option) and was dependent on the "moving time" field in Garmin Connect.

I think a good solution to this would be to put autopause into Garmin Connect instead .. as in there could be a user definable threshold and Garmin Connect can include everything faster than that threshold in their calculations. They could have the result show up as "moving time" or just replace the "time" field if they'd rather not have both. Users who don't want to enforce a threshold don't have to, but the rest of us could.
  • If your unit doesn't have the auto pause feature you can obviously just press start and stop for breaks. Then your time will be in effect your moving time and the elapsed time would be your overall time including stops.

    This isn't a viable option:
    1) My unit is often in my backpack where I can't access it.
    2) On occasions when I've had access, forgetting to pause is bad enough. Forgetting to start ruins the activity data.
    3) During mountain biking starting and stopping can be frequent. Having to do something manually that is readily automated is ridiculous.

Everyone I know wants to know how long they were out and how long they were riding. I have to believe that if requests to remove this functionality were really due to customer feedback that:

    1) Those people are in the minority.
    2) Garmin will soon be putting the feature back.

There was clearly something wrong with the old moving time calculation so it is better that they remove it rather than displaying some meaningless numbers.

They should fix the calculation not remove the feature.

I can't really agree with LISAFOX "you can obviously just press start and stop for breaks" for units like the Forerunner 210 where Auto-pause isn't a function.
This suggestion is a pretty poor work-around with a high level of effort for the users to do something that was a feature of the device when sold,
... and, as KEEPER111 states, frequent stops and starts will invariably lead to forgetting to pause and/or restart.

Maybe Garmin could, obviously, just restore the functionality.

I completely agree that removing Moving Time was a very bad idea.

I also used to rely on the Moving Time function and did not use Auto-Pause - which means that now, old workout data are much less meaningful. Even if I start using Auto-Pause from now on, old and new workouts will not be directly comparable.

In any event, as I understand the Auto-Pause function, it can NEVER be a full replacement for Moving Time, because it means that the stopping times will not be recorded at all. And at least in my book, it is valuable to know both total elapsed time and moving time for the same activity.

In fact, I would prefer that Moving Time was not only kept but expanded so you could see Moving Time/Moving Speed for each lap!

I agree on this. There is no other way to solve this problem then by bringing the Moving time back. I used to prefer Garmin products because Garmin Connect works fine, but if they can remove functions so easily, I lose my confidence. How can I make sure that other 'improvements' will not further ruine my data?

I wonder even if Garmin can restore the removed fields, did they delete all the data from our existing files? Knowing Garmin, I would not be surprised if they have lost all the old data and can't restore backups.
