What happened to "Moving time"?

Former Member
Former Member
It appears that Garmin has removed the "Moving time" and "Moving Pace" data points. Any one know what the reason was for this latest dumb move?

And was this previously announced or was it an ad-hoc move by some intern?

Garmin Help file is still referring to these fields:

What is the difference between the various fields listed under Timing within Garmin Connect?
05/25/2011

Garmin Connect processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields:

* Moving Time: includes only the time you were moving
* Time: includes time moving and time not moving (if Auto Pause is off)
* Elapsed Time: includes time between when timer is started, stopped, and reset (includes Auto Pause or manual stoppage of the timer)

* Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity
* Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause)
* Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed throughout the duration of an activity

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

Thank God I am not the only one who noticed this. I noticed when I uploaded last nights run but thought it was a glitch. Did an ANT update and a device update on my 405 and then noticed it still didn't show up tonight. This peeves me off. I loved that I didn't have to stop my watch at lights and still got accurate data. Please tell me they're going to put it back????

See the second article for details :-

    http://garmin.blogs.com/

Well it would be nice IF whatever they did actually worked.

Since I don't fully trust any online service (and the change they implemented with a mere mention in a blog that 90% of Garmin users probably don't follow certainly validates that concern), I also log my data into an Excel spreadsheet.

Here is an activity that I did on Sunday (before they changed the algorithm):

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/155080216

I logged MOVING TIME on Sunday as 1:51:12. But today, the new TIME field shows 1:54:00. So what happened to the missing 2:48???

I had a MOVING SPEED of 3.9mph. NOW instead, I have an AVERAGE SPEED of 3.8mph.

I had a MOVING PACE of 15:23. Now, I have an AVERAGE PACE of 15:46!

Way to go Garmin! Make the user feel like they are slower. What a great change idea!

They should have gotten rid of the TIME field and left the MOVING time fields stay in place if they were looking to remove a data field. Sheese.

    Edge 500

Does this auto pause work on Edge 500, and if so How do you set it up? My drop down menu from Training does not give such an option

Can we have moving time back please

Garmin, I have to say that losing "Moving Time" really is very inconvenient.

I have not in the past used autopause but have relied on using Moving Time and Moving Pace. And although from now on I can have autopause switched on, I will not be able to do any useful comparisons with past times because I won't know what they mean. Being able to see one's progress is the point of this data, so you have made it significantly less useful.

    Edge 500 Auto Pause

The blog link has links to tutorials of how to set it.

The tutorial is for Edge 705 and the 500 Training Drop Down Menu is different. Hence my query. I am asking if i am looking in the wrong pace because I am unable to find Auto Pause on the Edge 500
  • Why have people gotten so abusive here?

Do you really think insulting people at Garmin will encourage them to do what you want?

    Very childish and immature!

    Dear Mr. Master:
I just carefully re-read these posts and they seem quite civil by internet standards. Nothing foul, no four letter words. Just dismay at apparent thoughtlessness. I found my way here by trying to figure out where "moving speed/average/time" may have gone. Garmin just just wiped out an element of history that a lot of people probably valued with with no "prior" warning or explanation. I use auto-pause on the road but have always disabled it when the mountain biking where there are steep wooded climbs and intermittent signal loss triggers auto-pause when was still moving.

It is odd that a company that is about to launch a power meter, where using auto pause is generally a bad idea due to the different way proper analysis software deal with the missing data, is telling us we should be using auto pause.

And the reason - because some people are too stupid to understand what moving time means!

    please bring moving time back

To the people at Garmin please bring this feature back, ive had my edge500 since january, ive found it a real motivator with my cycling, when i uploaded my last ride my av came in at 10 mph, if id have used auto pause it wouldve been 14.6 like my ride partners, i stopped using auto pause because it played up, bleeping constantly. pause -resume for ages. i lost 18miles worth of data on one ride, so switched it off and was relying on moving speed instead, which i find more accurate, if you are on a long ride and have a few stops how are you meant to compare the same route at a different time. especially since all my previous moving times have been removed ? please bring this feature back. windy.
