Change to Bing maps disappointing

Former Member
Former Member
Hello,

I'm disappointed in the switch to Bing maps. The "far" view in both map and ariel is much more distorted than the previous version with google maps. It also seems that the terrain view has disappeared. I assume this was done as a cost saving measure, but from a user perspective, it's a loss of functionality.

However, I still love my garmin as a training tool, and has been helpful in my quest for my first full marathon in early december.

Chrome's extension brings back google maps to Garmin Connect

I have just published a Chrome extension to replace bing by google maps in the activity page of Garmin Connect. Still in beta but works fine for me so far.

    feedback welcome..

Works well. You still see Bing Maps in the activity list, but each activity when viewed in detail has the Google Map. Well done!
We are a step closer. We just need a FireFox (e.g. Grease Monkey) script to do the same in FF or the Garmin Communicator plugin needs to support Chrome.

    I emailed Gary.

I emailed dan, got the following
"I recognize that Bing maps are not as good as Google maps, but there are others issues that forced us to move in this direction.

    Regards,
    Dan"

In other words the deal is done and we don't care that it's made the product inferior
  • Google Is Back

Just found this and it works with CHROME.

I have put together a chrome extension that should switch your maps in your activity page in Garmin connect back to google. I have not tested it extensively yet so feed back will be much appreciated...

  • Just want to add my disappointment with the change to Bing. I'd just recommended Garmin to a cycling mate but having just seen how Bing looks c.f. Google I'm waive-ring . This is a serious error IMHO. The details and cleanliness of view is simply not there. Please, please listen to your customers.
  • I really would love to know what was behind this decision...

Dan, Dan, Dan.... what was Microsoft going to do if you stayed with Google Maps - take away your Zune player???

    Bing Maps are Useless

Not only are the maps worse, you can't navigate from one section of a map to another. The map functionality has become essentially useless if you want any details.
  • The answer is simple

Garmin should give us a choice of maps, Let the customers vote with their feet.

I for one am disappointed with Bing maps and actively seeking an alternative. My Edge 305 just went from "cool" to "drool". Thanks a lot Garmin
