3790T Problems Updating Software

Former Member
Former Member
Hi

When I connect the 3790T to the computer Dashboard or WebUpdater let me know that there are software updates available.

When I run the software update it tells me that it was successful.

When I go back into Dashboard or WebUpdater I get the same message that there are software updates available. Round and Round I go.

Can anyone help please ?

Nuvi 3790t does not keep Bluetooth phone directory/contacts

I correct what I said in above post. When you switch off the unit you have to press at least 5 seconds or 10 seconds for resetting. The problem is when you lock the screen (i.e. make is sleep) by a pressing only a second. That's when the contacts list disappears.

Nuvi 3790t does not keep Bluetooth phone directory/contacts

I have the same problem - HTC Touch pro 2. And all incoming call are displayed as one of my contact - the same one, no matter what the incoming number is.

    New to forum

    Hello

New to the forum but not to Garmin GPS (iq3600)

Currently have the 3790T and have not read all of the posts in this thread but also experiencing what may be a software update problem.

The current software version in the the unit (ABOUT) says: 2.50 and that was after a software update the middle of Sept.

After connecting my device to the computer and going to myDashboard, it says that a software update is available (YELLOW triangle)...so I do the update and follow the onscreen instructions after the "update" in which is says to disconnect the device from the computer and WAIT for the unit to reset and TURN ON...well the unit never turns on.

The information in the ABOUT still has the same software information it had before the "update".

After plugging the unit back into the computer, it detects the unit, and still states that a software update if available.

    Any thoughts on this?

Re:Nuvi 3790t does not keep Bluetooth phone directory/contacts

I have the same problem using HTC Wildfire with Nuvi3790T.
When Nuvi 3790T goes to sleep mode the phonebook is lost.
The only way to get it back is to delete the phone in the phonelist and do the pairing procedure again. When talking to Garmin support they told me that HTC Wildfire is not supported even if the compatible phone list says that HTC Android phones is compatible.....??? and there is no planned update in the future that will fix this problem  (Garmin support says)
    What phone are you using?
  • WebUpdater directions are wrong for the 3790T

Don't think this is going to solve everyone's problems. But, I have been able to update to the latest software and this is what I learned along the way. The directions specified by Garmin's WebUpdater are WRONG for Garmin's newer units like the 3790T. They current directions say that after installing the software update to eject your Garmin from the computer, then remove the USB cable, then WAIT for the Garmin to turn itself on. They say if you turn on the unit manually you may render the unit inoperable. This is correct for older Garmin units. But it is TOTALLY NOT correct for newer units like the 3790T. For the 3790T you MUST press the on/off button to turn on the Garmin and finish the update. It will NEVER turn on by itself. Anyway, I didn't discover this. I was given this information by Garmin tech support. I can't understand why they haven't updated the directions! Also, speaking of the on/off button. You may notice that if you press the left side of the button nothing happens. It's useless. Press the middle of the button and it may work. Press the right side and it works like a charm. It took a call to tech support to straighten this one out too. They checked a unit in their office and said their unit behaved the same way as mine! I mention this because when you manually turn on the unit, after installing a software update, you will need to press the right side of the on/off button.

A connection to the server could not be established.

Does anybody get this message " A connection to the server could not be established. Please insure that you have a connection to the internet and try again"

I have a 3760LMT and I downloaded the software update as requested from Garmin. It updated just perfect.

I downloaded the map updater and it downloaded just perfect. ( It is on my desktop)

When I go to update the map because Garmin say's an update is ready and available I double clic on the updater and I do get the garmin white box but then I get the message "A connection to the server could not be established. Please insure you have a connection to the internet and try again"

I tried updating on my AOL, I tried on mt Firefox, I turned off the virus protectin and windows firewall. I always get the same message.

I did spend an hour or more with customer service and was informed it must be my computer. I really don't think so because I did have a 1350LMT that came with a disc for map updates that worked perfect.

I have never had any problems downloading and updating anything for the past ten years until this 3760LMT from Garmin. I'm almost positive that it is a glitch in the Garmin 3760 software that is causing the problem.

They are closed on weekends, evenings and hard to get on the phone and have their Fax machine turned off. They should have 24/7 service for the money they charge for these GPS units. (Just not daytime service)

With all of the posts on these forums you would think that they would awknowledge these problems and assure their customers that are working on them. No they blame everybody's computer and say they have no problems.

    Hi,
    I had trouble as well updating i am not an tech-expert but i think something is going a miss with once the device is disconnect or ejected and once you reconnect via usb. Reason is i kept on getting messages regarding the device about whether to scan or not as if windows assumed i had files still to be written to the device. the root of the cause is somewhere there. anyway i manged to get it all up to date after several attemtps. also i am sure there are multiple updates available as the time it took to download them got shorter. Here is why i did;

    used crome as browser
used the web based update interface
once it completed the download i ejected the device via usb options
left the usb plugged in and simply hit the power button.

keep on trying i am not faulting garmin rather all this other variables out there we are talking multiple operating systems, browser etc.
  • I refer you to a reply in the "mac software>installing and Updating maps" from a garmin Desktop application developer from September 18th 2010:

"There are some firmware issues on the nuvi 3790 which are causing it not to correctly store the last MB or so of data sent to it. These will be fixed in an upcoming maintenance release, but for now you can try a few workarounds:
Put the SD card in a card reader if you have one and retry MapInstall.
Try installing to your 3790 again from MapInstall. After the transfer is done, copy 4MB of files to the card using Finder. This should flush the last data to the nuvi."

I'm not sure whether this applies to firmware updates too?
On trying to do any uploading to my 3790T I have had lots of problems, which I have reported to garmin Support. NON has replied quoting the above problem.

    Updates:

    1) Wrote Garmin and asked why they hadn't corrected the updating directions for the 3790T to say that you had to manually restart after downloading software. Assume others did the same and FINALLY I noticed that Garmin had rewritten the directions. They now say you must manually restart the 3790T after disconnecting the USB cable. So, a lesson learned. Keep plugging away at Garmin and eventually things might get better.

    2) I also have never been able to get a software update download to actually install into my 3790T by following the directions on MyDashboard or WebUpdater (actually the directions on WebUpdater are worse than MyDashboard). I have a MacBook Pro laptop running the latest version of Snow Leopard...10.6.5. As one or two others have mentioned, the only way I can get the software update to actually install into my 3790T is to do a hard restart - disconnect the USB cable WITHOUT first ejecting the Garmin disk. Personally, this gives me the creeps. Mac owners know that we are ALWAYS suppose to eject any external disk (as in a Garmin GPS) FIRST before unplugging the USB cable. If you don't, you get this WARNING! WARNING! screen saying that not ejecting the disk first may damage the disk (Garmin GPS). I have written Garmin about this, but can not get them to commit to saying that the hard restart is an acceptable procedure or that they need to update the software/firmware on the 3790T so that updated software will install without the hard restart strategy. Hm...how would you install that update without doing at least one last hard restart! Does anyone know any more about this?

I don't know more about it but I do know for sure that unplugging the USB without properly ejecting the device from your OS is perfectly safe, having done it many times so far with my 3790T. I know it goes against all that we already learned about proper use of external drives but nevertheless, you must make this one exception for the Garmin devices with nothing to fear.

With such a quirk aside, the unit has performed brilliantly even while travelling in India, China and Hong Kong as a pedestrian. I'm a happy man.
