nuvi 650 Screen occasionally unresponsive

I have a strange issue going on with my nuvi 650 and was wondering if anyone else has run into something like this.
It has happened twice now with my unit that the screen becomes completely unresponsive. I have already gone through the whole "keep the power button pressed for one minute to get to the calibration option", etc. never was able to complete that since the screen would not respond.
HOWEVER, if I let the unit plugged in for a while, even if the battery shows a full charge, upon unplugging, the screen works just fine!
Are these signs that it's going bad? It basically ONLY stops working if the unit sits unused for a while.
I am experimenting to see if a temperature difference causes this. Just today, I took it out of my car, which is parked in a garage, brought it in, powered it on, didn't work. I let it sit plugged into a wall charger for a while and now it's back to normal.

    nuvi 650 screen doesn't work

the touch screen on my 650 was way out of calibration... so.. i tried to recalibrate.. but it was so far out, it wouldn't work..

Then i tried to connect to the computer.. but i couldn't get access to the 650 disk drive because the screen was stuck on the notice that i needed new maps ($79)...

I finally got to the drive.. but the gupdate file wasn't there.. so i had to reload the software...

Now i get to the recalibration screen.. but the screen is not workign at all.. i can't push the little dot... Any ideas on how to get the screen active at all?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
I just check on my 650 and it was off calibration again....so I just did the Pre-boot...holding the on button down until the calibration screen came up. Then I used a pencil to tap on the dots and it's "working" again. Seems pretty flaky to me. I also got a message that I needed to update maps, but I'm not spending any money on a unit that I'm not ever sure will keep working....probably gotta chuck it and get a new one...I'm guessing the electronics are failing...sorry I don't have any more suggestions.
The was a guy who had a garmin site..if I find his site, I will post it...

My Garmin was the best thing....until now...

    Thanks mountainman41 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was ready to throw out this stupid (but expensive) nuvi 660 after only a year because it would randomly stop responding now and then to screen touches... It seemed to happen right when I needed the darn thing most.

After reading MOUNTAINMAN41's post (I looked all over the Internet for help on this issue) I looked around the edges -- nothing obvious seen on the immediate edge. Then I simply ran a piece of hard, thin plastic under the bezel and I must have cleaned something out by doing that... the screen started to work again!

    :D

Very happy. There are so many people out there having problems with this device. I hope others (Garmin people included) find your post and rid themselves of the nuvi 6xx headache.

    Thanks again.

I figured out why my 650 becomes unresponsive.
Basically the internal battery is shot. It only has enough power once fully charged to power the GPS for about 30 minutes, 45 minutes tops. When the unit sits unused for extended periods of time (a week or more), it becomes completely dead. Upon first plugging in to power and starting up, the screen will not respond. If I let it plugged in to charge for about 30 minutes to an hour and power it back up, the screen will work fine.
I have been able to duplicate this behavior time after time.
I've already tried the pre-boot screen calibration mode, it doesn't work for me. The screen is still unresponsive. There is nothing covering the screen or the edges. In my case the battery is at fault.

I have had this intermittantly happening with mine for almost two years.
    I finally found out why.
The ribbon wire between the screen and the board was damaged and the touch response open circuited. I put pressure on the connector and it was ok while applying the pressure. But I couldn't keep the pressure on the correct spot to keep it working.
In all other aspects it was working so I just bought a new one........
