Garmin Connect suddenly not compatible with my android version

I have been using the Garmin Connect Android app (v4.76)on my Samsung phone to download workouts, without issue. Since yesterday, I can suddenly no longer download rides, my phone says that my Garmin Connect app is "not compatible". I did not upgrade to a newer Android (still on 8.0.0), the apk is supposed to work just fine for Android 7+, so why does an existing version of Garmin Connect suddenly not work on my phone?

I am trying to roll back to an older version of Garmin Connect that is still compatible, but I do not seem to be able to pair my Garmin device (Edge 820).

I had the Connect version 4.76 before, tried rolling back to 4.72 (which is also Android 7+ compatible), but this version has pairing issues with the Edge 820.

I would appreciate help in solving the workout download aspect, which is the only reason I use the app (as I do all the work on the desktop).

I am not interested in getting a new phone or upgrading to a newer Android version, nor buying a new Garmin, all of these are just fine for me and have been doing the work properly. I would like to use my Garmin on this phone.
