Garmin - Is this nonsense for real??

As a runner and a software professional, I am truly amazed at the completely AMATEUR management of this transition / migration from Motionbased to GC. How so? Let me count the ways:

1. You are NEVER allowed to de-feature a product that a customer has already paid for and is actively using.

2. You either have migrated the data or you haven't. I'm missing my data since 6/30. It's completely ridiculous to say 'we got most of it and the rest will come later sometime'. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.

3. BUGS! Where is your SQA team? What is your change control system? Do you have quality criteria / metrics that you have to meet in order to release something to the public? How can you let this poor quality software see the light of day??

4. In light of the MISSING FEATURES AND MISSING DATA AND BUGS for GC, you don't cutoff customers from the system that works. That was a really DUMB management decision.

You should go into damage control mode and re-enable MB right away. Then, you can go figure out how to get a new software development team.

Otherwise, can I please have my MotionBased money back?
  • Amen bother Yienr59, and yes you are correct on all 4 points but other than venting this forum will not provide you any answers. This is because the moderators most of which are merely volunteers do not have anyway to help and the moderators that are GC employees must be scared of the developers that are responsible for this fiasco. They have made it clear that they only provide a very limited amount of feed back to them. According to the moderators “try not to laugh” the developers frequently visit this forum and review our concerns. This is evident by the complete disregard for its customer base.

I hear they are releasing a new revision at the end of the month "yeah no date, typical GC update". I am waiting to see what that addresses and if it is not > or = to MB I am out of here and on to a solution that provides the data I became accustom to on MB. This sucks because it will take hours for me to migrate my data but I guess on the bright side I will stop waiting months for GC to migrate it.

Thanks GC you guys really know how to build a loyal customer base!!!

What's most awesome is that GC has been live since October 2007. That means someone thought GC was ready for public use back in October...of 2007. I have deduced that at this rate, the GC elevation issue will be fixed in 2011.

An email I received from a GC developer also states that users are flocking to GC in numbers much greater than MB, "the stats don't lie", and they LOVE it! I am serious. These people do not have a clue that there are problems with GC and refuse to address them.

    Lima Time - Believe It!
  • Yeah, send me that guys email address and I will take the time to let him know exactly why GC is a complete failure on every level.

Agreed. I am also a Motionbased Pro member, having gladly paid the fees for what was an outstanding, albeit slow, resource. The "transition" to GC has been horrendous, and on top of it, GC itself is a badly designed, pseudo Web-2.0 piece of garbage that sacrificed piles of usability in exchange for looking like a cheap iPhone application.

Just give us back MB and cut your losses on this one. GC is a failure, it's terrible. Your paying customers dislike it en masse and it's apt to make longtime customers move to a different brand and a site that isn't as abysmal as this one is.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but if it does it's because your "transition" team deserves the criticism.

Nothing will come out of this. They will just ban you from the forum.

What galls me the most is that they have my data. It's a total breach of the vendor / customer relationship. I've been in the technology business for more than 20 years and I can't recall an experience as messed up as this.

Especially appalling when you consider that Garmin has a market cap of $5.6B! Can't imagine that a multi-billion dollar company hired a bunch of amateurs to do a customer facing project... unbelievable.

Note to self: short GRMN today

I do not agree with the above statement.
many different users started different thread outlining their frustration.
This is tolerated here to the point that thread from users with specific issues with their own device PC/setup are hidden by the massive flow of complain about the "already_know_by_all" various limitations of GC.

    Try this:

subscribe to any other forum of a device you don't use yourself,
find on the forum what people are complaining the most about, then
start multiple threads talking about the same topic, or repost the same complain across the forum and you will get banned there too.
The less civil the language, the faster you will get banned.

For instance, if YIENR59 was banned for his post, I would be the first to
claim that banning him was unfair.

but if YIENR59 starts posting new thread about the same complains or reposting his post everywhere here, I wouldn't care if he was banned...

    These are universal forum rules...

    Guys (and gals)....

Relax, take a deep breath... put the Garmin Connect into perspective.

You must know the 80/20 rule of products. With GC, it is probably more like 95+% of people which are happy with a simple webapp to track their mileage, time and calories. Compare GC to say the Nike+ website in features!

Imagine for a second you just bought your first Edge, you never knew you could track your rides with GPS - and upload to a website - and see maps and charts online? This is pretty amazing stuff and very high tech. :D

The other 5% - it's unfortunate most of those are coming from MotionBased - Garmin has to face an established community of high-demanding customers. Vocal, but lets be honest, a minority.

Could GC be better? Yeah... probably. I'm sure the coders are doing their best. Like every business Garmin needs to make a decision where to spend money, how much to invest, priorities. Garmin Connect is a FREE service!! The business case ends when people stop buying new Garmin GPS - then it becomes an expense and nothing else. Minimize expenses. Cut costs, cut investment.

Garmin has done an excellent job of allowing access to watch info with their API, now others can innovate, and fill the niche of "high demand" needs, specialized features, and still come back to Garmin for their GPS purchase. I say it was a VERY smart decision. Kudos to the strategist. Look around, you have a lot of options for tracking workouts on the web.

MotionBased is gone. Purchased by Garmin and decommissioned. Probably part of a bigger strategy - buy the customers? maybe. Buy the dev. team? maybe. Kill the competitor? maybe.

    So... MotionBased is gone....

    Respectfully,

    get over it.

    somebody had to say it.

Respectfully, it would be a lot easier to "get over" if GC worked with any of my three Garmin devices. Since it does not, and since I'm still out $100 that I paid for my MB Pro subscription, I think I, and others like me, are entitled to some venting on these forums.

If you bought a new Cadillac and were "upgraded" to a Ford Escort and told to "just get over it", you'd be a bit miffed as well. MB was leagues ahead of GC, and even discounting features, there are still several Garmin products that GC doesn't even work with.
