Intensity Minutes ?? what's that?

I've just finished my road bike ride, looked at the stats and I can see

10 mins? amazing....

My ride was quite intense, but how does it compare to time HR Zones ?

I'd say 16 mins above 90%HRmax is quite intense, and 42 mins in 80-90%HRmax range as well.....

  • What devices are you wearing and how are you logging the ride?

By default, it does not compare to the time in HR Zones at all. It compares HR to the 7 days avg. Resting HR, and as e7andy suggested there are also differences among individual device. If you recorded the ride with an older Edge device, then those do not count any IMs at all. The IMs then came from the watch, which probably used just the optical HR sensor in low-power mode, hence it was not very accurate. Besides that, some watches require 10 continuous minutes of HT elevated above the threshold. Read all details here: How Are Intensity Minutes Earned? | Garmin Customer Support

  • Edge 840 with HR strap

  • yeah.... as always Garmin crap ....

(I compare the values, so it's clear that my activity was 'vigorous' and IMs not)

    Edge 840 with HR strap

however 840 is mentioned on that list :  List of Devices That Do Not Require a 10 Minute Threshold to Earn Intensity Minutes

*** stuff.... never anything is calculated correctly, HR during a day is missing values from activities etc.

what's the point of showing these lousy 'intensity minutes' if they cannot even calculate them correctly.....

  • What is your average resting heart rate?

Post a link to the activity so we can look at all the values.

Did you wear a Garmin watch at the same time?

What is odd is that you only got vigorous minutes and not any moderate. To get any vigorous you would likely log lower HR values which would count as moderate.

  • rest is about 45-50bpm, max 195 (on a bike).

I don't wear a watch (fenix 6 pro) during my rides, I have Edge 840 for that.

well.... doesn't matter, I don't use those lousy IMs for anything, and they don't look like useful for anything if you know how to spend your time doing sports ....

  • However, I have other activity (the same setup: bike, hr strap, edge 840), it was a bit longer (~5h moving time)

And Edge managed to register more minutes.

  • What was your 7 days avg Resting HR for the concerned day? You can find it on the detailed all-day HR screen, but you have to select the same day as the concerned activity. If it was too high, the IM threshold was high as well, unless you change the IM settings to use the HR Zones instead.

  • my 7d avg yesterday was 48bpm

but, even if it changes to 49 or 50.... do you think such change would affect IMs, when I spent 68 minutes above 80%HRMax ... (rhetorical question)

  • At people who only use Edge and no watch, the 7 days avg. Resting HR can be easily 100 bpm or even more, since they do not use it when resting. In such case, to get some IMs, the HR would have to be somewhere minimally at 150 bpm, or even higher. So yes, even if you spend 68 minutes above 80% of Max HR, the IM threshold can be even higher. If you do not have a reliable way to detect the Resting HR, change the IM settings to use HR Zones, or disable the auto-detection of the Resting HR, and set it manually.
