Garmin Coach: Confusing Easy Running Pace

Hi Guys, i'm new to garmin and marathon running as well.. so i headed into week 2 of my half marathon training plan when i changed my goal from finish to a time goal at pace 5:40 mi/km as well as increased the amount of training from 3 to 4 trainings per week.

now as i see my next training, it's an easy run. the confusing part: easy pace at 6:19 to 6:56 mi/km. i normally run some 8ish or 9ish as an easy pace ( HR < 145).

sooo.. what should i focus on? the easy pace, means orientation on HR < 145, with the consequence that I cannot maintain the pace ? or on the target pace, means that wouldn't be an easy run, with the consequence that the Training Effect is probably worse? will this adjust over time or is it a bug in the pace calculation (yes, I know that I get faster with time and the calculated pace will probably match the effective one) ?

  • I’m an experienced runner but new to Garmin and my initial findings/experiences are not good.

    Training plans are what they are, not personalised and therefore not relevant, I’ve been running a 5:20-5:40/km pace for half’s and full marathons for 20yrs and would never waste a run at mid 6’s a km. Even if I’ve not been running for 3 or 4 months running that slow would actually injure me.

    I think you did the right thing by listening to your brain/body and creating your own plan.

    Today I did a strong 16k, flagged in the middle but finished strong with an ave pace over the 16km of 5:25/km.

    That was using my usual Strava app with an iPhone 7.

    The Garmin forerunner 45 was way off, it dropped the signal at 10k so I had the ‘straight line’ on the map from 10k to the finish.

    Nice watch, app is too fussy with lots of rubbish on it that is inaccurate and irrelevant, we are just out there running, no need to reinvent cardio….

    Like so many things today, take off the bells and whistles and just make the gps data accurate.

    How does a watch on a wrist, drop a connection to a phone in the front pocket of a running vest, when my 10 dollar Bluetooth headphones never drop out…?
