No vigorous Intensity Minutes, missing '300 Intensity Minute' Badge

Hi.

tldr; one day i got a heap of points, and some days later, no points, even though the second exercise were harder and longer.

I need some assistance in understanding how intensity minutes are being calculated.

I get the basics, you need to exercise for at least 10 minutes before intensity minutes are being calculated. Moderate minutes is one point, vigorous double.

On may 15th, i did a trail/mountain run, generating 265 intensity points. Being this close to fulfilling my last missing intensity minutes badge (300), i extended that run (by quite some distance) yesterday (may 21th). I was surprised to see that i failed to generate any vigorous intensity minutes at all, compared to the previous run.

The pace and average heart rate for yesterdays run, support that exercise being harder than the previous one.
I ran with two smartwatches, Forerunner 920xt & Vivosmart HR. The latter only being used for this purpose, namely getting the intensity minutes badges.

I certainly feel i should have been awarded the badge, but i cannot fathom why i was not awarded a single vigorous intensity minute.
Thanks for any replies.

Edit: Yes, anyone can review my fitness data. I consent.

The example for vigorous minutes (female jogger) are less than my average heart rate.

  • Which is sort of ironic, isn't it? The more fit we get, the less likely it is that our HR will reach a high level for the entire duration of an activity.

Yes, but in the same time, the more…

  • If you share a link to the concerned activity, and a screenshot of the Average RHR for given date (find it in GC Web Reports » Health), we can perhaps see why you did not get any IMs for that activity.

I think the problem may have something to do with my Instinct's ability (or inability) to track a pulse while swimming. Still, in general, the intensity tracking seems wonky.

  • It is not wonky at all, it works quite fine, both with the old Instinct as with Instinct 2. I used Instinct 3 years, and now have Instinct 2, and do not experience any problems with IMs at all. The old Instinct does not support HR during swimming, and although there are some tricks to have some, it won't be reliable, so do not expect IMs from swimming with Instinct.

You did not post a link to the activity, that you missed IMs for, and you also did not post a screenshot of the report showing your Resting HR for the same date as the activity. As I wrote, it is in Reports » Health » Resting Heartrate, where you have to scroll left to the concerned date: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/60/wellness/last_seven_days

  • ... as for the IMs for swimming, read also the paragraph about it in the FAQ I linked previously:

Watches that support optical heart rate while swimming can give credit for intensity minutes when swimming in open water or a pool. All other watches will not give intensity minutes for swimming unless you are swimming with an HRM-Pro that is also paired to your Garmin Connect app on your phone. See Can I Get Intensity Minutes From a Chest Heart Rate Monitor?

It means you either need a different watch, or a chest belt HRM-Pro.  Even if you trick out Instinct to give you the HR during swimming, it won't be reliable. It was not designed to work under water.
