Possibility to create custom training plans

Looking at past topics in the form, it seems as if requests for a possibility to create own's own customs training plans have been around for a while but apparently were never taken up by Garmin? Are there are any major technical obstacles ....? I can't be the only one who'd want to easily upload his weekly / biweekly training routine without being required to drag ever single workout to the calendar over and over again..?

There is the Strength Workouts in https://connect.garmin.com that you can define your training plan, copy/download/share/etc.. so its a great idea!

But to my surprise is only for the Fenix 5. (just got a 3HR last week). :-(

The only good news is that Customer Service replied with the following which is the how-to for creating custom training:
Note: Strength Workouts are not the same as a way to capture a user defined activity...

Anyway, I thought I could share with everyone:

I'm sorry, the Strength Workouts in Garmin Connect are compatible only with the fenix 5 watches.
The fenix 3 series of watches are preloaded with many activity applications, but do not cover all possible activities. Custom activities, such as Strength Training[SUP]1[/SUP], can be created on the watch to capture the activity. Creating a Strength Training Activity
    • Hold the UP button to open the main menu
    • Select Settings
    • Select Apps
    • Select + Add New
    • Select Str. Training
    • Choose a color
    • Select Custom
    • Select Strength
    • Select Use Default
    • Select GPS Off
    • SelectEdit Settings
    • Set Data Screens
    • Set Alerts
The custom Strength Training activity is now ready to use. Suggested Data Screen setup for the Strength Training
    • Screen 1: 2 Fields; Timer, Calories.
    • For the fenix 3 HR, or if a heart rate monitor is used: HR Gauge
These steps can be used for creating other custom activities, such as Ellipticals or Stair Climbers.
[SUP]1[/SUP]The fenix 3, and fenix 3 HR, do not support Strength Training Workouts created with Garmin Connect.

    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

Check tirerack.com you'll find it there..
  • I have an idea that might work if you wanna create your own training plan.

If you take an existing traing plan, lets say a Marathon plan.
Add it to the calendar where you want your own custom made plan to start.
Now you go and check your plan in the meny "training plan".
Now you can edit the workouts the way you want it, change the name, training type, time, pulsezone, notes etc.
Go to the calendar and move the workouts til the date you want it, one by one and click, "just move this workout"

Sync with your watch and Bob's your uncle.

I havent tried it myself yet but I think its a good way to get a training plan exactly how you want it
  • iFrillo - yes this does work and whilst it gives some benefits it is a long way from the facilities that could be offered in a plan and is still fairly tedious to set up. A while ago runners world used to offer Garmin plans of various durations for 5K,10K, 1/2 Marathon etc - for these you could enter various parameters for your different pace zones and it would then create all the workouts for you based upon your own zones. I'm sure it wouldn't take Garmin that much effort to produce something similar.

Although it requires some geek knowledge to use it, I have successfully used https://github.com/mgifos/quick-plan to create my own workouts and training plan. It allows using a (quick) CSV file instead of the (slow) graphical user interface of Garmin Connect. And also, it allows sharing workouts and/or training plans between users (CSV files are easy to share)

Marxav Interesting utility you linked to. I have a couple questions that you might be able to answer.

Does it support creating workouts for activities other than cycling and running? I'm thinking swimming and strength training specifically.
When it schedules a training plan does it actually get created as a training plan in Connect (i.e. does it show up in the training plan widget on the dashboard) or does it only schedule as workouts on the calendar?

I've read through the documentation and the source code a bit but couldn't quite figure these out (to be fair I don't know SCALA specifically so I may be missing some things).

PaulDN81 The quick-plan software only supports cycling and running.

When quick-plan "schedules" a training plan, it actually "only" create the workouts in G.C. workout directory and add them in the G.C. calendar according to the wanted dates (i.e. as per the -s start-date (or -n end-date) of the command line plus the delta weeks and days stated in the csv "plan" file).

10 days ago, I did not know Scala but I was able to easily extend quick-plan software to add power and cadence in csv workouts, which was accepted by mgifos and will make part of the upcoming 3.3.4 version. I have also tried to extend it for swim workouts but I have not succeeded to do it so far (I spent 30 minutes on trying to do this, but it seems to me that I definitely need more time for that... unless someone else succeeds to do it before me ;-).
  • I would like to either create a custom training plan or at least modify the workouts in the pre-made training plans.  Why is there no editing or modification?  I like some of the plans, but if the plan is 21 weeks long then I don't want it to be rigid.

  • I really wish for this to be implemented!
