Cannot add new gear to a workout, cannot edit the 'first use' field for gear

I went for a run with a brand new pair of shoes, and the workout automatically uploaded (via my phone) immediately after I finished. In the workout editor, I tried to add my new shoes via the "manage gear" link, but it did not add my shoes to the workout. Also, it has the wrong date for when I first used the shoes.

I think what's happening is that I cannot add the shoes to any workout that took place before the 'first use,' but since I cannot correct the first use, I cannot add them to the workout where I actually first used them.

Is there any way to get around this? I suppose I need to add my gear on garmin the day before I intend to use it. Or just not bother using that feature, since it's already a bit of a pain.
  • PubBike well it’s not that important to me as I’ve never run into the problem, but it seems important to some people, especially combined with the other bug which does not happen for everyone. As you have pointed out, this seems to be yet another problem that has confounded Garmin users for years.

I just think it should be editable as a matter of principle, or maybe even not exist, as I said.

If the workaround is time consuming or annoying, then I don’t consider it to be “easy”. Easy would be quick and not annoying imo.

Anyway, I just posted a way to edit the first use date if you have a pc, Mac or android, so I hope that’s useful to somebody.

I can understand if most ppl would rather just have an official solution, especially one that works across all platforms (especially the app). But for now, this is as good as it gets.

Also, I think we have all gotten too used to bugs in the Garmin ecosystem that have workarounds so in many cases we don’t bother reporting them. I’ve seen it in the forums and in the dev ecosystem where problems that seem extremely obvious to me go unfixed for years. Sure, it’s possible that Garmin doesn’t have the resources and never would’ve fixed them in the first place, but in some cases it just seems that people are willing to “live” with the inconvenience. I think all Garmin customers deserve better.
  • Thanks for your workaround solution. I was wondering whether Garmin had foolishly encoded the date into their database key but your workaround very clearly shows that they didn't and that this issue could easily be rectified.

I should said "me" more in my previous post. It is easy for me to fix and it is not a problem for me. After counting my confirmation emails it seems I have formally reported maybe 70 issues just by email not counting other channels to Garmin over the years, but just not this one. Sometimes it just takes a very conscious effort to report a bug, and even then it can be hard to get Garmin to reproduce the error and accept that there is a problem, so I'm not really surprised when people don't bother.
  • PubBike You’re welcome! Yep I agree reporting bugs takes effort. It’s a form of free labour by users and CIQ devs, imo. So I’m not surprised either. But it’s resulted in a culture, intentional or not, where we all just accept bugs, and some of us expend more effort in saying “you’re doing it wrong” than actually trying to help ppl. I see lots of ppl posting that Garmin is known for terrible software. So how does that change? I guess it doesn’t. It's funny because that reputation seems to extend to the devices, the forums, and in some cases, the CIQ ecosystem (although that's improved a lot, to be fair.). That can't be a coincidence, as I imagine it's all different people working on those areas. It has to be part of the company culture.

EDIT: As a side note, it would be possible to do a similar hack on iOS, but you would have to log in to the GC website on mobile Safari, which I assume most people aren't willing to do because it's slow and the UX is not great, in that case. It would also be a bit more work to test and produce a working solution, which would have to use an alternate method besides Requestly, since browser extensions aren't supported on iOS.

So hopefully anyone who needs this has access to a computer (which isn't locked-down) at some point during the day.
  • Just to confound this further there is currently a bug in the product support website so if reporting this just use [email protected].

If the gear was created on the same day as the activity, this problem could be related to the timezone on your computer/phone as a date includes the time even if it is not visible.

    Some evidence:

Yes, as mentioned in a previous post, I already confirmed (to myself) that when you add gear, not only does the date get added, but also time of first use, which is midnight local time (translated to UTC/GMT).

For example, if your GC time zone is set to New York time, and you add gear with a start date of February 3, 2019, GC will actually set the following data
    February 3, 2019, 05:00:00 UTC

So if your time zone is wrong in GC somehow (or there's a bug), then the start time may be incorrect.

Of course, this is completely unnecessary, and Garmin could just omit setting the time, or (if it's easier), simply ignore the time when doing date calculations to see whether gear is allowed to be used on a certain date. Of course, this is just more work for them, so I can see why they didn't do it.

BTW, coding time/dates is a lot harder and more complex than one might think. This kind of bug proves it.
  • Wow that's crazy, I'm a new Garmin user, and all your points are still valid 5 years later, that's crazy! Can you please put that topic higher in your backlog Garmin!

You can edit the starting date on the app. It was available on the web some time too, but now it is blocked again. Hard to tell whether by mistake or by design.
