I can't tell you how much I am distressed by your new system. I was happy with the old system and used it for almost a year.

I can't see my activities and your tech person was as frustrated as I.

It is so stupid to take a good system and totally ruin it.

I am now on my third Edge 1000. They have given me nothing but trouble.

Until today, I always thought that your tech support was the best. You have left your people up in the air and unable to help us.

Your management should be fired. They obviously don't know anything about running a company.
  • Looks like the negatives are out, as with any update, there's always someone who prefers the old way. There are probably people who are still complaining that the took the automobile headlight dimmer switch off the floor, and put it on the steering column.

I for one say take some time, I mean, more than 30 minutes, test the new arragement, look at it, play with it, and if after 2 weeks, you're still not satisfied, specifically mention what it is that you don't like. The general "This sucks" is nothing, if you can't say exactly what sucks, you're not helping, you're whining.

I don't mind advancement, sure, it was easier to get around the "old" system, but then, it "sucked" at first too while I was learning it. These guys (and gals, most likely) spent a lot of time creating this, why not give them a bit of time to evaluate it?

    Just my 2c worth.

    New Format

Ugh...the new website format is terrible. PLEASE go back to the old format. Why fix something that isn't broken?
  • Filtering by date

    Hi Garmin's programmers!
Why I can not filter all activities by date??? New version is horrible, nothing to find correctly, where is the screen for edit all activities???
I know the habit is an iron shirt, but previously version was fine.
Garmin, I loved you very much, but the more you get worse! :(

Can't speak for anyone else, but I posted a lot of details about what's not to like with the new update, such as bugs and limitations. I wonder how many people would be okay with it if the forum suddenly changed to an infinite scrolling format (like the new GC activity list) instead of multiple pages -- it would basically be pointless to try to navigate any thread longer than 5-10 pages, or to browse forum topics older than a few weeks.

I noticed that even mobile-friendly forums (not social media) still use pagination. I also noticed that one popular tech forum switched to infinite scrolling and there was a widespread negative reaction -- keep in mind these are all tech-savvy developers and mostly people under 30; after about a year of criticism and attempts to "fix" the system, the site admins gave up and switched to a completely different system that still uses "old-school pagination". Sometimes newer is not better.

With four years worth of activities, something like jumping to (roughly) the middle of that list is impossible with infinite scrolling, unless I want to scroll for about ten minutes. I know there are other ways to do what I want (like filtering by date ranges) -- once I've done that, it isn't possible to browse even one day out of that range. With pagination, you can jump to (roughly) where you want to go in a list, and continue browsing without limits. I would even support infinite scrolling if it was done properly and efficiently (i.e. with a scrollbar that lets you jump anywhere in the list, instantly). But it's done in the default way, which is useless for long lists. Scroll to bottom of very small portion of list...wait for more items to load...scroll to the bottom...wait...repeat ad nauseum.

Or maybe it doesn't matter because nobody needs to look at old activities. Why bother having an activity list at all? I use GC because it does more than GCM. Changing GC to have some of the same limitations doesn't make sense to me.

Changing the look and feel is fine with me. I think it looks better, actually. Reduced functionality isn't. Of course I'm not entitled to anything from Garmin (although I've certainly given them enough of my money over the past 4 years >_>), but this forum is here so we can voice our opinions.

As an analogy, I saw a similar reaction to negative reactions when Windows 8 came out and MS got rid of the Start Menu. Most people hated it -- not just because it was new, but because it made the OS harder to use and removed functionality. There was a vocal minority which criticized the majority for complaining. "Hahaha old people, I bet you're still clinging to your Model T. Just grow up and accept change!"

Both parties had a right to complain, but I never understood the reflexive mocking of people who dislike some specific change, or the assumption that's it always one group of people that hates change or that these people hate all change.

Not all change is good and not everything needs to be improved. I say this as someone who fights for change (both aesthetic and functional) all the time at work. I say as someone who wishes that my org would upgrade all our hardware and software instead of using outdated stuff. I say this as someone who can't believe that some of my coworkers are using software that was discontinued decades ago and which has a countless number of replacements which all do the same stuff and more, yet much more efficiently.

I actually like change in technology. Positive change, anyway.

Anyway, the start menu is back in Windows. I wonder if Microsoft would've randomly made that change if nobody complained?

I'm guessing the new GC will evolve, too. I wonder if Garmin would have any idea what to keep and what to throw out if users never said anything?

I've actually seen orgs design user interfaces with zero user input, completely based on the whim of management (which happened to like stuff from the 90s, early 2000s, ironically). Wonder if it would be better for Garmin to just randomly design stuff without any regard for what users actually want?

I don't mind advancement, sure, it was easier to get around the "old" system, but then, it "sucked" at first too while I was learning it. These guys (and gals, most likely) spent a lot of time creating this, why not give them a bit of time to evaluate it?

Well, there's at least two (non-exclusive) reasons people might find it harder to get around the new system:
    1) They haven't learned it yet
    2) The new system is objectively harder to use/more inefficient

If it's mostly 1), then users still need a reason to prefer the new system, other than "that's what it's going to be and you're going to like it". Assuming that Garmin wants its users around for the long term.

If it's mostly 2), then I wouldn't call it "advancement", I would call change for the sake of change (or to follow a trend). Like changing a paginated activity list to use infinite scrolling, because social media.

Summary: Endless scrolling saves people from having to attend to the mechanics of pagination in browsing tasks, but is not a good choice for websites that support goal-oriented finding tasks.

    horrible

This new update is horrible. So many features lost from the activities page. quick edit button, detailed search, courses, etc. Please "downgrade" these back in.
  • WHY?

Im on a ryzen 12 thread system and the new "looks" stuttering like hell from within chrome if i open the sideboard.

WHY do you split steap in "earyl morning" "morning"...and so on?

Worst update i ever seen on a page like these.

    changing activity

Firstly it is GARMIN. Learn how to spell.

Secondly what's with all these 1-post users complaining all of a sudden. Where did you all come from?!

Thirdly the update rocks. Spend more time using your devices to get better and less time complaining on forums.

Oh, so by your first post you were already a multi-poster? Lighten up and since you are such a brainiac tell me why I can't change the activity type from my default "running" designation to walking, kayaking, biking etc. I could do it easily up to and including June 15th but not today the 17th using the new format.

    Garmin developers...

..could you let us know if you will change anything and let us:

    - filter by course
    - in the activities list see more than 5 columns
    - quick edit in activities
    - paginate the activities list

Myself I was looking to replace my 3rd Garmin with a 4th, but with this version like it is I will change brand.

Well, maybe we didn´t have any complaints earlier?
The old version was really good.

    The update sucks.

I know you really don't like this, but i personally feel it's fine and none of the points you make are really issues. More getting used to a different way of doing things.

E.g., if i want to go back to 2015 and check my training leading up to the Berlin marathon all i need to do is add a condition in the advanced search to only show runs up until (roughly) 01/10/2015. It was pretty straightforward to do this. And to be honest, not something i do very often (go that far back in time).

So i personally like the infinite scrolling, much more than trying to guess how many pages worth of runs equals 1 or 2 years of training (and having to click and load to find out). It's no different than how TrainingPeaks works (which i haven't heard anyone complain about). If you want to go a long way back you use the search to jump there. If it's recent, just scroll.

Overall, after playing with the update for a few days i like it a lot. The devs clearly have a lot of bugs to work out. But the refresh is certainly an improvement and has modernised the UI in a positive way IMHO.
