Martial Arts

I am surprised to see obscure activities such as wingsuit flying listed, but not martial arts. Will you please add martial lists to the list of types of activity? Many thanks.
  • Ugly or not, the end justifies the means Slight smile

  • BTW, problems of syncing are in the vaste majority of cases a problem of the phone and/or its settings, or because of diverse manufaturer-specific adjustments, like power-saving, safety feautres, etc, etc. You will find hundreds of threads about sync problems equally here, like at Suunto, Fitbit, or wherever else. In the majority of cases, its just a usage problem and wrong configuration. A true hardware problem can of course happen too, but it is extremely rare.

  • Same for Taekwon-Do.  Need the data

  • Not sure about your specific watch, but on most models, you can add any sport you wish. With my Garmin Instinct, I did it in the following way:

GPS button (up right) » scroll up until the + Add option » scroll up to Other » enter the name of your choice, select and tap the checksign, adjust screens, alerts, and other options, complete, and eventually change the position of the new activity screen

  • What are you saying? Why would they not respect mma as a legitimate exercise activity? It's just as valuable as any other exercise activity. Definitely more popular than wingsuit flying.

  • Definitely more popular than wingsuit flying.

I do not think that the selected sports have much to do with the popularity. More likely the chosen sport categories are done for groups of sports with different type of tracking, or requiring different stats. From this point of view practically all indoor sports are more or less in the same group "Other", because one of the main features allowing for some relevant tracking, the GPS, does not work indoors.

Are you aware that you can define any sport you wish, including any martial sport, on the watch? Just press the GPS button, scroll to the end, use the Add function, select Other, and enter the name of your martial art sport.

  • What activity you have used on martial arts now?

I use "other" but i was thinking would it be better use cardio?

  • Yeah, cardio - but that seems to be an 'equipment' based activity.  They need to add as a specific activity.

  • I practice karate and want track how many calories I burn along with my HR when practising at home.
There's no option for martial arts on my watch (fenix 6 pro) so I've tried tracking it via the cardio preset, and then also creating my own in the 'other' preset.
Clearly both theses options use different algorithms because the calorie difference is massive. On the cardio setting for 20mins during a warm-up it says I burned 200 calories - which seems a lot. In contrast in the 'other' setting (with and without GPS) over 50mins it says I burned 200 calories - bit of a difference!

Which setting should I use? One burns a crazy amount of calories very fast, and the other doesn't but also seems to focus more on distance that I may have travelled (even though I'm not going anywhere). Or is there a better preset/ setting I could use?

  • Garmin devices with an HRM calculate the Calories by comparing your HR during the activity to your average resting HR, so it does not really matter what type of activity you choose.

What is important though, is that the device can properly record the average resting HR. The best is wearing the watch 24/7, especially when you sleep. If not, then at least during longer periods of complete rest. If your avg resting HR is not properly measured, and changes between two sessions, it results in considerably different values of burned Calories during the activities.
