Battery drain since update

Since 2.7.5 my battery is being eaten up by GCM. I've noticed my phone will be warm when I pick it up (this rarely happened before). On average CPU time is around 30% of total time on battery. Right now my phone has been on for 5h41m and GCM is responsible for 18% of the usage (next biggest user, the screen, is at 5%) and has a total CPU time of 1h33m27s (only 1m7s in foreground). Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix for this?

It turns out they hadn't heard of the issue. I've been emailing support back and forth for a few days now and they're unable to reproduce it. I've been supplying them with diagnostic information from my phone to try to help them get to the bottom of it. They mentioned that they hadn't heard of anyone else with this issue so if you have this problem contact support so we can let them know we need this fixed. The more they realize that this is a widespread problem (and not just one isolated instance) and the more data they get on it, the quicker they should be able to find and fix the issue so please reach out to them. Thanks!

It's quite easy to repro - install GCM and switch on Bluetooth, battery dies in roughly 12 hours. Switch off Bluetooth, or uninstall GCM and the phone lasts 3-4 days.

This is a Moto G without a SIM, so airplane mode with WiFi and BT usually left on. I'll try and raise a case with Garmin, but they may well just point out that the Moto G isn't on their (tiny) list of supported Android handsets unfortunately...

It definitely didn't used to be like this, but can't remember which recent GCM update introduced it. There seem to have been so many in the last couple of weeks. Can anyone remember which update made it noticeable?

Their compatibility list is extremely short. It doesn't even include a single Nexus device. For me the issue began with 2.7.5. I have noticed in the last couple days that it will sometimes work now and I think the issue stems from taking my watch out of range and then bringing it back so that bluetooth reconnects although I'm not 100% sure about that yet. I'm continuing to let them know my experiences and sending them any debugging information they ask for. I still feel like the more people we have bringing this up with them the faster it will be resolved.
  • I am having a similar issue. LG G2 connected to edge 810, had 2 one hour rides to and from work today. Battery usage has garmin connect app showing 3 hours of keep awake time and 5 hours of gps time, and the app shouldn't even be using GPS, the edge 810 is doing that. It killed my battery, causing to go into low power mode during the ride and disconnecting from device.
  • Same here. Installed the Garmin Connect App on an Samsung S4 mini running Android 4.4.2. Phone gets unprecedented hot and battery is empty within 8 hours. Had to uninstall the app.

I resume this thread to report that since the last update (3.3.2) I have the problem of increased battery consumption. I'm sure that id depends from Garmin Connect App because I solved it by disabling notifications to the app from system settings.
I believe in this way the service that listens for connected devices is no more active, I also believe that service is the responsible.
  • Can You explain how did you disable the notification service?

You have to go in System Settings -> Apps Settings

Then sele Garmin connect App and you should have an item "notifications" or something similar. Click on this item and you should have an option to disable notifications.

Note that those system settings change consistently from one Android version to another, but I'm sure it's possible al least since Android 4.1.

    Ciao
