Forerunner 920XT issues - GCM hanging and Re-pairing required with pin

Hi guys

Hopefully support read this forum so it is a useful post and also to hear from others with similar problems

My setup
GCM 2.5.2
FR920XT (firmware 2.5)
Android 4.4.4
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Issue #1 sync hang

Had a lot of hanging when the forerunner is syncing.. in the image you see that the sync is hanging half way through. Once it hangs nothing to do but try and crash it (usually by turning off bluetooth on phone)
I think I have found a work around (think).. which is to leave GCM using the back buttons (repeated until it takes me back to the home screen) rather than use the home screen button.

Issue #2 re-pairing with pin
This is the real biggy
Several times a day I go out of range of the phone. When I do the connection is lost and the only way I can get it to re-establish the connection is through re-pairing using the pin.
If it was a 'click here to reconnect' button it would be fine.. but the whole thing means I need to ..
a. pull down the notifications bar from the top and click on the Yes to connect request (when the phone spots a request)
b. pull down the notification bar from the top again and this time go through the re-pairing process by entering the pin showing on the watch.

It is seriously taking away from my 920XT experience

Things to note
1. I am a long term Garmin user and have used GCM/bluetooth with my Edge 810, Vivofit and FR620 (the 620 could be fussy and not always connect, but usually worked)
2. I have tried the usual..
  • Turn on turn off Bluetooth
  • Turn on turn off phone
  • Remove device and re-pair
  • Uninstall and reinstall GCM

Would love to hear if this is a known issue that others are experiencing and if Garmin are working on some fix

To garmin.. really don't mind being a tester.. been with you guys since the FR301 :-)
  • Since my rooting and using cyanogenmod I have been a happy bunny

I still have occassions to re-pair with pin but they are few and I think I can figure out the circumstances to resolve (for instance.. with the issue of the app hanging during sync I now use the app Tasker to turn off Bluetooth, kill GCM, turn on Bluetooth and restart GCM - this then reconnects without my intervention or need of paring and everything back as normal.. but this is only possible with a rooted phone)

Not sure I can recommend anyone to do this as you are effectively putting you phone out of warranty, making it unsupportable by Garmin etc.. (and in the case of my Sony.. losing some cool Sony overlay bits - but cyanogenmod has some equally cool ones to compensate :-) )
But it does show that many/most issues are up for resolution

It also shows that Garmin and other firms are up against it with all the android derivatives
  • I just got my 920 this week and have the same re-pairing problem with my Nexus 5 running the newest Android 5.0. Hoping a fix is found soon!
  • Same issue here with Motorola Moto G 2014 and Android 4.4.4......unfortunately!
  • I have an s5, and it has made me repair it about 3 times in 3 weeks.
Not that bad, but not as "easy" as with say a BT headset.

I am sure it will get resolved.
  • Same here, have to repair several times a day with a nexus 5 and android 5.0.1
  • Same here with Z1 compact on 4.4.4. Pairing is required even when I use the Wi-Fi upload. It seems that when connecting to Wi-Fi the watch disconnects from BT and will not connect again without repairing.
  • I have the same issue with a nexus 5, android 5.0.1 and 920XT with firmware 2.57 beta.
  • As mentioned in other threads, I tried deleted pairing in the Android settings and performed pairing directly in GCM. Since then, BT connection works.

Another user here with issues with a Nexus 5 and Android 5.01.
It constantly asks to re-pair which renders it essentially useless.

    I have this issue constantly:

-I pair watch to phone (I've done this both through the phone options and through GCM options).
    -Run.
    -Sync post-run to GCM.
-Set watch aside until next run.
-Next day, pick up watch. Bluetooth doesn't connect to phone automatically or when I turn BT on/off on phone.
    -
-Watch is listed in the devices on phone but watch says "waiting to connect" and GCM says "Disconnected".
    -
-Unpair from phone. Get a GCM error that watch was disconnected (but.. I thought it wasn't connect?)
    -
-Repair by removing the watch from phone completely then starting the whole pairing process over as a new setup.
-Connection successful (most of the time. Sometimes it fails and I need to unpair all, reboot, and turn off wifi then try again).
    -Run.
    -Repeat.

This wouldn't be as terrible if there was a way to force-sync the watch. Sometimes when I reconnect, the watch fails to upload to GCM and there's no way to retry without unpairing and repairing it. The whole reconnecting manually every time is incredibly frustrating especially when everything else I own works perfectly fine.
