Disappointment with Garmin Products and Strategy

Dear Garmin Team,

After many years of using various Garmin products, I now feel the need to express my frustration — and I’m not alone in this. Several friends and training partners share exactly the same opinion.

First, the ELV4 heart rate sensor has been delivering completely inaccurate data during workouts without a chest strap for over a year now. For a company focused on precise sport and health metrics, this is simply unacceptable. The fact that this issue has been known for such a long time and remains unresolved is, quite frankly, a disgrace.

Furthermore, the Garmin Connect app has significantly deteriorated with version 5. The previous version was intuitive and well-structured. The current version feels cluttered and less user-friendly — a view echoed by numerous reviews on the Play Store and in online communities. Yet Garmin seems determined to push this update through, despite all the negative feedback.

What ultimately led me to the decision to move away from Garmin is the introduction of the Premium subscription. Charging €8.99 for features that were previously included in the device purchase is, in my opinion, outrageous — especially for long-time users who have already heavily invested in the Garmin ecosystem (Edge 1030 Plus, Forerunner 945 and 955, Edge 1040, several HR straps, Venue 3s, etc.).

Garmin is increasingly losing touch with its customers, and as a result, we are seriously considering switching to alternative solutions in the near future.

Disappointed regards,
Frank

  • The Connect+ app also gives you a great deal more customization for your dashboard, you can get the data you want and how you want to see it, that was removed from the Connect web version when they made the disaster update to the Connect app. Users who do not subscribe will lose out on a feature that was taken away by Garmin and then returned behind a paywall.

  • yup, the beginning of the end for Garmin Smart watches. Why improve the free software if they can hide everything behind a paywall. One braindead manager and now we have this BS.

  • Complete BS. Give me a free watch and I will pay a monthly fee. Me pay for a $1000 watch and a monthly fee? Never. One braindead manager and now we have this BS. Btw, the Garmin software has always been cludgy, they are smoking crack if they think AI is worth a monthly fee

  • It is disgraceful. We pay a premium price for Garmin watches. I was under the impression that a part of this cost subsidised the supporting App - Connect.

Splitting off features into Connect+ at an extra cost is a disgrace. More and more functions will go behind this paywall.  Really, really, unhappy over this treatment.

  • I bought the Edge 520, FR55, FR245, and FR255 to avoid additional charges, but Garmin has made me feel like a pushover. I'm deeply disappointed with Garmin, and my next watch will likely be a Suunto or Coros.

  • Pay to win for badges is a no go! Stop it immediately or you will lose a massive amount of customers.

  • I am very disappointed as well, FR 955 after many years since its release still full of bugs. I'd rather solve previous problems, than trying to monetize from connect.

I wonder if we (customers) will receive any announcements, definitely they will not go back and I am scared they will act the same way strava did.

  • Anyone buying fitbits now? Maybe the same boneheads that ruined that are now at Garmin. I really enjoy all of my Garmin products, time to look for alternatives. Gadgetbridge has some potential and training peaks has much better coaching. Hopefully Garmin will change their mind before it is too late, but they have lost my trust

  • All badges that Garmin released used to be available to everyone. Now some badges that are released will be reserved only for those who  pay a subscription.

  • anyone that has those badges is a fool who is helping Garmin to implode Grinning
