About the new Beta Interface...

I have been using the new Beta UI for a bit now, and I must say, I hate it.

Here are my thoughts, and I am wondering if others feel the same or differently.

1. In Focus: I don't see the point of this. It basically shows a taller slideshow container with a maximum of 5 items. I don't see any additional information than wat was available on the tiles before, but now the information for 4 out of the 5 items is hidden, requiring me to scroll to see it. Why hide the same data that was available at a glance before, and make me scroll to see it?

2. At a Glance: This is now limited to 8 items. It requires me to click on See All to see the rest of my data. Why?

It makes no sense, since if I didn't want to see an item before, I could just uncheck it and hide it.

The vertical tiles are fine, but the rest feels more like someone new came in and wants to change things, for the sake of change. But it is not a good change, and it will impact my decision to stick with Garmin in the future.

Having said all that about the poor usability, I should complement the design itself, which is a nice refresh.

  • For example, making the Forerunner's heart rate visible on the Garmin Edge cycle computer.

You can enable the heart rate broadcasting on your Forerunner, connect it to Edge, and then Edge will use the HR from your Forerunner. It has no relation to Garmin Connect, and works even without the phone: Can Garmin Watches Broadcast Heart Rate Data? | Garmin Customer Support

Or you can use the Extended Display Mode to view some data of your Forerunner on Edge: What is Extended Display Mode? | Garmin Customer Support. Again, there is no relation to Garmin Connect.

  • I'm not happy with want of the new Beta screens or options either. It caused my Garmin to freeze, it took a lot of effort to get it to power off, and then when attempting to return to normal mode it refused to exit the device testing screens. The battery went from 47% to shutting down on less than an hour. While regarding my Garmin decided to go back to normal operation mode.

How do I get out of the Beta test?

  • Why not allow to freely position tiles. Per row either one full width or two half width tiles. And it should be possible to optionally add row separators so that multiple tiles can be visually combined or separated.

Yes, please! Not really a fan of the new layout otherwise, especially the focus tiles.

  • I agree. Currently have a family of 4, all of us switched to Garmin on my recommendation from another fitness brand last year. Love the current layout, cannot stand the new one. I was going to upgrade device and get the scales for us all to use. Now I'm hesitant.
Its truly awful. The tiles look terrible, like a failed Windows 8 interface. I liked the vertical scrolling, the vertical/horizontal is just bad design. There are better ways of updating the app.

  • I agree this UI is not good enough, instead of using edit to add new cards for glance or in focus, why not just slide between hide and show, also can do better at a glance, don't limit it to 8 and show all, I know in focus can show graph like body battery, But I also think at a glace can show the same graph if garmin wanted.

  • I totally agree, the new interface is bad.

  • I have now left the beta programme.
Everything was too buggy and too sluggish for me.
    It was just annoying.

  • I like the web version a lot more because more is visible at once..

As for the android version: "in focus" does seem ridiculous when i have to side scroll.. that actually takes my focus away!

Actually all that side scrolling breaks the ease of use.  In the previous version i could simply scroll from top to bottom and along the way see everything and be uptodate.  Now i have to stop for "in focus", "todays activities" and side scroll.

Same with the "hidden" "at a glance" .. i would love to have a (persistent) toogle to only show the top-8 or ALL glances.  Maybe even with NO limit.
