Garmin connect runs in background, starts even after force to stop

How do I stop garmin connect from starting and running in the background?

All notifications are switched off, after the run I just open app sync with watch and force to stop. That is all I need. But app keeps starting and running in the background, why? what are the triggers?

Why is it so important to garmin to run the app all the time? Is it intention to collect and report or just badly designed app?

I do not want to switch off the notifications about Garmin connect running in background, because I do want to stop it running and not not knowing about it. :o)  It will run in the background, but android will not report it. That is not a solution.

Yes, it does not take that much battery, but "mosquitoes in numbers will eventually kill the bull". And currently I have the luxury of charging phone 2x a week.

Any solutions??

thanks

  • but it is still running in the background (even if not in task manager), consuming battery and internet - not that much but it should not at all. go to setup/application and there is "force to stop"

you just do not see it, either you have to set up android to tel you what can and can not run in the background or you have swiped notification about it to "not show this notification"

app is very bad design sneaky behind back not complying ... OK I see your point it is designed like that intentionally ...

  • I do not think it is a bad design. It is the way how all Android applications are supposed to work. Garmin just adheres to the Android standards. How else could the app process diverse tasks like forwarding notifications, sending weather reports to the watch, syncing, etc. if there was no background process watching for the requests? Still, when GC is swiped away it really does not do almost anything, and it does not even appear in my battery stats even after letting it so for a full day.

If for some reason you want to use it only sporadically, and really want to shut it down completely, while avoiding the hassle of passing through Android settings » Apps, just  long press the GC icon or task, go to App Info, and tap Force Stop there. The Force Stop is a complete kill of the app - all processes are killed, all services stopped, all notifications and alarms removed, and the app is not allowed to restart without an explicit intentional request.

That's the common way, that practically all Android apps complying to the standards, use.

If you use the app just for downloading the data from your watch once each couple of days, and for nothing else, consider uninstalling it completely, and sycning your data over the USB cable to a computer with Garmin Express.

  • if you remove reasons (notifications ... are off) for running in the background app should not run in the background. Jut like is advised by google and just like most apps behave. Actually only GC does this, other apps like stocks, weather...starts in the background few times a day for few seconds.

Using USB sync is really crazy work around for misbehaving app. Not to mention expensive watch and reputable company.

As I have written before, please take note of it. I switch off BT on phone, close GC in task manager, force to stop in app info and even then GC starts background process after few minutes sometimes once sometimes twice.

  • force to stop in app info and even then GC starts background process after few minutes sometimes once sometimes twice.

Enable Developer options (go to Settings » About Phone then tap the Build Number section repeatedly until you see the ‘You are now a Developer!’ message appear), then go to Developer options » Running services » Garmin Connect, and stop all services it uses.

  • thanks, did not know that

still bit brute to switch app off like that

  • I understand what you said. I can force the app to close in android setting.

But what i see. it's if i turn off some option like (maintain in background, auto launch at phone startup), when i go run, even i turn on bluetooth, the synch between watch and app not work (bye bye livetrack). It not work because i modify setting option in android and app don't like. So i can force to quit but i found strange to not give the option of use the app when i launch it (i have not my watch always wrist and don't need to be connect every minute to synch step, heart rate).
