I tested 3.0.1 the first time the other day, and imported quite some clips and photos from it, after checking the import paths were set as I wanted them. The possibility to set a prefix for the filenames with the import is a great improvement I think. Thanks for that.
However, when looking through the photos directory, I realized I was missing several of them. A quick check on the camera itself I see they are there. Luckily I did not choose to delete everything from the camera after the import. I have learned my lesson with new software ;) Some further investigation show that the ones I am missing in the imported folder actually have the same filenames on the camera, but are located in different DCIM subfolders. So, when importing, even when adding a prefix, they get the same final filename to be stored in the same import directory. And here is where it goes wrong. Either the file already there is overwritten, or the second (or third, or 4th, or..) is not saved at all. I haven't checked yet what really happens, I only know I miss files after the import.
What *should* happen here is that Virb Edit should add a counter or something to the subsequent files that get the same name after import. Or even better, (as been suggested many times before for the video files) add the files timestamp to the name of the imported file. Such as 20150614102356_VIRB0001.JPG. Then it is quite unlikely there will be a conflict in the end. And to that, add a counter if a file with the name already exist.
When realizing this, I also checked if the imported videos had the same problem. All of my videos were imported fine, but then again, none of them had the same filename as another one on the camera this time, so I can't tell for sure video import is not impacted the same way.
- When *always* using unique prefix when importing, this is only an issue when you have many new clips/photos on the camera in the different subfolders (where the counter start from 1 again).
- If you're not (always) using unique prefix when importing, this may be an issue if you have several files in the import directory already. It is quite likely you'll import a file with the same name as something there already, given the VIRBxxxx.mp4 naming scheme. (I don't know how many files I have imported with the counter value added to the filename, as was done with pre-301 versions (and may still be done for video, but not for photots)
