Common Problems
Symptom:
Playback works, but export fails immediately, or after running for a short time.
Common Solutions:
1. Make sure to download the latest version of VIRB Edit, we're always working hard to fix bugs!
2. Attempt to restart the application and try again.
3. Temporarily disable anti virus software. Some anti virus software is known to indirectly cause issues when using windows VirbEdit.
3a. For BitDefender, exclude VirbEdit from the Active Virus Control (AVC). If that doesn't work, you might have to uninstall it entirely for export to work.
(Use caution when disabling your antivirus software, and re-enable it as soon as possible. Do not do activities such as web browsing without your anti-virus software enabled.)
4. Some users with a large number of videos experience this issue. While 1. should usually fix this problem for such users, in the event it does not
attempt to use a fresh database and recreate the desired project. Only import the videos you need to complete your project.
Starting with a fresh database may be done by following these 3 steps:
- Navigate in your file system to C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit
- Rename the folder called "Database" to Database2 (or any other name you want)
- Start VirbEdit and all your projects and videos will not be visible in the application
To Restore your original projects and videos
- Close VIRB Edit
- Navigate in your file system to C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit
- Delete the new "Database" folder created by VIRB Edit and rename your Database2 folder back to "Database"
- Start VIRB Edit and all your projects will be back.
Symptoms:
Any attempt to open the edit page, play, or export a video causes the application to crash and display the "VIRB Edit has stopped working..." message box.
OR
On the Edit page, my video doesn't show up, I just see a black screen.
Solution:
- Ensure your video card drivers are up to date. The Windows driver update utility often reports that out of date drivers are up to date. Visit your graphics card vendor's website and download the latest driver directly from them.
- Ensure that your computer meets the minimum requirements. We are working hard to lower these, and make it work on more machines in each new version of VIRB Edit.
- VIRB Edit may not be able to load and play some videos not recorded with a Virb camera. While we make some effort to ensure that all popular video formats work with VIRB Edit, some may not. If you are using such a video and experience problems, try removing the video from your project and see if the problem goes away.
Symptom:
My video plays (or exports) until a specific point in my project, then the application crashes, freezes, or displays an error message.
Solution:
Attempt to play the video in which the freeze occurs in Windows Media Player or another well established video player. A few users
have found that one out of several hundred videos they took with the VIRB camera are corrupt and cannot be played in any video player. Such videos cannot be easily repaired
and should be excluded from VIRB Edit projects.
Symptom:
I use Windows 7, and my video exports to the very end, and at 100% I get an error message.
Solution:
The underlying Windows 7 technology VIRB Edit uses imposes a hard limit on the file size it can produce (4GB). If your exported file
exceeded that size you will receive an error message at the end of the exporting process.
Note: VIRB Edit attempts to warn you if it estimates that your file will exceed this limit on Windows 7. Its estimates are intentionally higher than the file
will likely be to avoid this error. Actual file sizes depend on a number of factors, particularly how much motion there is in the video you export.
None of the above helps. What can I do?
Make sure you have read and tried all of the points above. Then send an email to with a description of your problem.
Attach a log file from your failed export or playback attempts.
To get the log file:
- Go to the About page and 'Turn on extra logging.'. This will make the log file more verbose and will hopefully give us the information we need to diagnose the problem.
- Try another export, then locate the following folder on your hard-drive: C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Temp\VirbExport\{Latest Version of VIRB Edit}. For me, currently running 3.3.2 this would be C:\Users\FALAGAR\AppData\Local\Temp\VirbExport\3.3.2
- There should be at least one file in there named something like: app1392221853.log.

- Is it a Laptop or a Desktop you are trying this on?

- How much RAM does your computer have?
- What CPU (processor) does it have?
- What GPU (graphics card) does it have and how much memory does that card have?
