Web Updater obsolete, or isn't it?

I wanted to make a video about how to update your VIRB using VIRB Edit.
VIRB Edit starts Web Updater to do the updating.
I discovered that on a part of a screen my mouse disappeared.
I asked a question about it.
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?135549-Web-Updater-problem-(where-to-put-it-)&p=387896#post387896
SUSSAMB told me that Web Updater was obsolete and replaced by Garmin Express.

One question solved (more or less) raises, as often the case is, more questions.

WHY?
Why starts the latest version of VIRB Edit (2.6.2) an obsolete program to update the VIRB (Elite)?
Why does BaseCamp (4.3.5) also start Web Updater for updating the VIRB (and other hardware)?
And so raises the question: Is Web Updater obsolete, or isn't it?
And if it isn't obsolete after all, brings me back to the original question in the now closed post.

That's not quite what I said. You asked about WebUpdater being updated, I said as it had been replaced by Express I couldn't envisage that happening :)

Which is true. Webupdater hasn't been updated since June 1st 2012 and I doubt it ever will be. That said I still use it (I don't use Garmin Express) and it's still working for me.

My guess is that there's some conflict between your mouse driver and Webupdater. I'd concentrate on your mouse driver to try and resolve the issue.

BTW "obsoleted" doesn't necessarily mean non-functional or useless. It just means it won't be updated further.

Ok, Web Updater is obsolete and not to be updated, so is MapSource and I find it still better than BaseCamp.
It's difficult for Garmin to force users to use the latest version if they don't like it.
    But....
I expected that Garmin would use their most up to date updater in the latest versions of BaseCamp and VIRB Edit.
But they still use the old one.

+1 for Mapsource, I'm not keen on BaseCamp at all.
  • Yup. I still use MapSource too :) As long as it still works I'll keep using it.

MapSource, WebUpdater and a few others are native (i.e. x86) apps. BaseCamp, Garmin Express etc are .NET ones. That makes them larger, slower and more prone to Windows issues.

WebUpdater is not obsolete. It's just working mostly fine the way it is currently.

There could definitely be updates in the future.
