Video overlay getting out of sync on export

When doing plenty of cutting in Virb Edit the sensor overlay is more or less in sync. But as soon as I export it goes bad and my sensor data is way off from what the movie shows. The longer into the video the worse it gets. Like the more cutting you do the more out of sync it gets.

Even if I adjust the GPS track on every little clip the export throws everything back to what it was. The adjusted original movie is correct.

I save in 720p/30fps.

Are you running VIRB Edit 2.6.2? You can check in the About dialog.

In 2.6 we've stream-lined playback and export and the overlays should look the same. If you are running 2.6.2, we'll have to find a way to take a look at your video and data.

I think ARKLEY16 missed your reply. We're colleagues and have discussed this a bit. Yesterday I ran into the same issue when exporting one of my projects. Today I did some more in-depth tests. And here are the results. There's really something fishy going on with the export and overlays.

    Virb Edit 2.7.0.0

project list the length as 8:11.
Edited movie show a total time of 7:28. Match the time the transitions cut from the 8:11?

    46 1 sek transitions with 45 clips

GPS from the Virb Elite as imported together with the clips. Video captured in Economy HD, 720p 30fps

Export is done to 720p 30fps and the resulting video is 7:28 minutes long.

Text overlays do not come at the same time in the exported video as in the preview within Edit. And do not behave the same way (in Edit, 3 lines fade in 2 sek after eachother as they should. In exported video all 3 lines show up at the same time, and stay around for much longer than they should)

    Checkpoint 1:
    Virb Edit video time: 1:22
Virb Edit time duration overlay: 4:43
    Exported video time: 1:22
Exported video duration overlay: 4:30 (13 sek drift)

(text overlays that should not have shown yet has already passed by in the exported video)

    Checkpoint 2:
    Virb Edit video time: 3:00
Virb Edit time duration overlay: 14:18
    total distance: 1.14km
    Exported video time: 3:00
Exported video duration overlay: 13:49 (29 sek drift)
    total distance: 1.02km

    Checkpoint 2:
    Virb Edit video time: 5:20
Virb Edit time duration overlay: 33:51
    total distance: 5.21km
    Exported video time: 5:20
Exported video duration overlay: 31:15 (156 sek drift)
    total distance: 4.87km

Text overlay that should show at 5:20 in the movie, as it does in the preview,
was shown at 3:26 in the exported video. 2 minutes before it should show.

    Checkpoint 3:
    Virb Edit video time: 7:00
Virb Edit time duration overlay: 40:30
    total distance: 6.01km
    Exported video time: 7:00
Exported video duration overlay: 37:16 (194 sek drift)
    total distance: 5.58km

Text overlay that should show at 7:00 in the movie, as it does in the preview,
was shown at 5:08 in the exported video. 2 minutes before it should show.

This really need to be solved, as it is not useful at all as it is now.

    Thanks.

If you add a transition, the movie is shortened by the duration of this transition.
The clips overlap durint the transition.
8:11 minus the 1s transitions is about 7:28.
The difference is probably cause by rounding.
The duration is in seconds, the actual transition might be a bit longer.
When you have a framerate of 30fps and you have 40 frames it would still be 1 second.
Three transitions of 40 frames would be 120 frames = 4 seconds!
When you have 45 transitions this would add up to a big difference.

Yes, I understand how the transitions make a difference in the total time of the final movie compared to just adding the times of each clip together. But that is not the problem here. The problem is that the overlays get out of sync, but only when exporting the final movie. This is something the latest releasenotes for 2.7.0.0 say was fixed, but it is not.

When previewing within Edit, the overlays work as they should, and the GPS duration time overlay mach each clip and transition perfect. In the exported movie, the GPS duration time overlay is out of sync with more than 3 minutes after 7 minutes. Imagine what it would be in a longer movie where I also might want to show sensor data. That data would be way out of sync and not useful at all. Also, the text overlays I add do not show up where I place them in the exported movie, but do when I preview the movie within Edit just before clicking Export.

Indeed I missed the reply ;-)

I concur with Egge's findings that the final movie BEFORE exporting seems to be working fine with overlays not being out of sync despite many transitions. But once exported it goes very wrong. The sole reason I bought the Virb was the overlays. So this is a key issue for me.

We are aware of the issue where data gets mis-aligned on export when using transitions. This will be fixed with an upcoming maintenance release.

We apologize for the trouble and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

    Hi,

Edit 2.7.1.0 made the sensor overlays work much better. Re-exporting my video make them match 100%. Thanks a lot for that, I can now finally finish all the projects from one year back ;)

However, the title overlays are still behaving very strange. They seem to show up more or less at random points (although in the correct order) in the exported movie. Within the preview they are correct. Even if I try to remove them from the project and readd them again at slightly other positions, they still show up "here and there". For now, I cannot use title overlays as I am unable to control where they end up in the exported movie. This seem to be true also for newly created projects within 2.7.1.0, and not only for already existing ones that showed this problem earlier too.

I am getting a sync issue with my audio file. When I preview it in virb edit, everything lines up. When I export, my audio file is cut a couple seconds before my fade out. My video and audio files are the exact same length in virb edit. What is happening?
