New SD card Map not recognized by Garmin Express

I purchased Garmin City Navigator Europe 010-10680-50 on an SD card and my Nuvi 3597LM recognize it perfectly. I can see the EU map, but when I plug it to Garmin Express nothing shows. It does not see the pre-installed EU map on the SD card. It only sees the map pre-installed on the Nuvi.

Later on I want to be able to buy updates, possibly a life time update, but it won't work if Garmin Express does not recognize it in the first place... And the device does not have enough memory to contained both NA and EU so I don't mind keeping it on an SD card.

Secondly, I'd like my product to be registered but again if Garmin Express does not recognize it it won't happen either.

Any thoughts?

fyi: I'm on a MacBook-Pro
  • It'll be worth calling Garmin. I've known them swap in circumstances where mistakes like this have been made.
  • FYI DVD road maps usually come with a one-time update these days because the maps can be "out of date" by the time someone buys them. However, as SUSSAMB said, you need to buy a nüMaps Lifetime subscription to get lifetime updates.

Yes, probably not a bad idea...
I did send an email to Garmin but with the Holiday I can expect some delays in responding.

That is the only thing I knew of which I was certain after having carefully looked into lifetime update :). I just didn't realize the true distinction between products. I do hope Garmin make this process easier in the future. It should be possible to do all via internet in 2015 :D

I don't mind paying extra for life time updates. I can understand how this is a premium option. I use it enough it is worth it for me to get :)

Well as per the post I linked to earlier in this thread most Automotive models (nuvi, Zumo etc) come with a lifetime subscription (LM suffix in the model name) these days so it's a non-issue in most cases.

As you know Garmin has had models with both US and European maps preloaded. My guess is that the market for these is rather small. In most cases users are merely visiting (business trip, vacation) the US/Europe so a card/download is quite sufficient.

    My 2c.

PS: Garmin, like many corporations these days, seems to use the 80%/20% rule. Satisfy the 80% and forget the other 20%.
  • This may be slightly off topic, but I think it is worth mentioning so you don't get another "surprise" or disappointment when you install the DVD version. When you add Europe as a supplemental map to a North America nuvi, you will not get some of the enhanced map features (like Junction View) on the Europe map.

True. But that is the case for all supplemental maps whatever the format (download/card/DVD). The extras only come with pre-loaded maps on a unit. To put it another way if your device comes with those extras so will map updates for it.
