Garmin Express can't sync with Garmin Connect

What is the deal here? Express and my Forerunner 110 syncs fine, but now, every time I try I get an error message saying that there was an error when trying to sync with Garmin Connect. This used to work fine. It's only been, for me, the last couple of months. This needs to be fixed. Oh and saying that it can be updated manually ISN'T a fix.

I normally get this message when Garmin connect is down and use https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/status to check its status. Or I get that message when a file has corrupted.

I am sorry that you are having trouble with Express. If you are receiving this error, there may be a corrupt activity file stored on your computer. Try deleting this folder:
    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\[Unit ID]\Sync

You can also check the files on your watch to make sure there is not an old activity file in Garmin\Activities that may be causing the problem.

How could an old activity file be causing an issue, it's already been synced? If I delete that folder, wouldn't I then lose the data in Connect?
  • Sorry customer care agent no disrespect but that's rubbish. I've cleared all the activities on both my device and the computer and guess what? Still doesn't sync. The only way I can download my activities is via a plugin on Sporttracks then export to a GPX file and upload to Garmin Connect. That suggests that the file is not corrupted as it loads perfectly well in three platforms without using your faulty software. Given the sheer quantity of issues that people with different devices are suddenly getting, it can only be Express that is the issue. Please own up and fix it!

Could you post a screenshot off your Garmin Express with the show more to see what's causing the error

Deleting this information from the device does not delete it from Garmin Connect. Those activities have to be deleted within Garmin Connect itself. As for old activities causing problems, this can happen on devices when the memory starts to fill up. Older activities can be truncated and modified to make space for new activities, depending on device. Since the data is in Garmin Connect, it should not be necessary to keep it on the device.

  • Adam W - From the opening shot of the Garmin Express video it's clear that it's using the old version with a sync button - that was the one that worked! One of the many frustrations is that they removed the "Sync now" button so the only way to force it to sync is via the watch and it then spends hours transferring files but still ignores the one that you want to access. A screenshot would simply show Express either doing nothing, or (if I've set transfer all on the watch) syncing for hours and hours, then either telling me it's complete (when it's not) or occasionally failing but the error message doesn't actually tell me why. On a couple of occasions it's been down to the battery running out but on others it's not clear.

I've also searched my hard disk and there are no downloaded files, corrupt or otherwise. Express is not downloading files so your fix won't work - sorry!

My advice to anyone is not to upgrade Express until the new version is fixed.
  • Lisa - I've completely cleared all activities from the device (the memory was 91% full) and it still doesn't work.

I've just downloaded the latest version and you're right, I now wish I hadn't. As a little experiment to see if it would help you or not I corrupted one of my activities and tried to sync but the new version of Express opens a window and show's me which file I need to go and fix.

I guess you don't see this same window?
  • Never seen a window like that which might be because my files are not corrupted or alternatively it's perhaps ignoring the latest activity for some reason. Either way the file is not accessible until I retrieve it using the SportTracks plugin, at which point it doesn't seem to be corrupted in any way.

How about if someone from Garmin provided me with a copy of the previous version that seemed to work - if that now works again it would prove that the new version is either faulty or at least incompatible with various people's setups? Just a thought.
