GarminExpress fails to install on Win7 Pro 64 bit

I can't seem to find this thread. I have a PC with win7 pro 64 bit. I can download GE but it won't install. You know, Failed try again! When I first got this new PC last summer, I installed GE and updated both my Nuvi's. I had some problem with the PC overheating and shutting down unexpectedly, so Asus had me "System Restore" back to Factory day 1. Did not solve that problem. Sent it for repair and when I received it back, did all the Windows updates and then tried reinstalling GE. It will not install. I did however install it on my daughters Asus with Win8 no problems. Updated both my Nuvi's also. So the problem is on Win7. I also was on the phone with Techies from Garmin for 2 hours with them taking remote control of my PC to no avail. So what gives?
  • Well since you clearly believe it has nothing to do with your system my only suggestion is you call Garmin Support and let them look at your system remotely to see if they can shed any light on the matter. I've seen very few problems posted here and on other forums about Express not working on Win7 Pro so on balance of probability it's more likely the problem is within your system somewhere ... but hey, I'm just a user like yourself so could be completely wrong.

I'm guessing that when you consider all the things Express is intended to do automatically, there certainly can be a conflict with another program or a configuration issue. For example, does the PC use User Account Control? If not, would that get in the way of installing Express? My Win 7 Pro 64 Bit installed fine. I've been using it for months although I haven't tried the latest version yet. It is turned on for me because I get the annoying dialog box about Garmin wanting to make changes to my system when my PC starts up.

My feeling is that unless there is a large outcry like we had for December's bluetooth and Connect issues, the problem has to be local.
  • try uninstall Express
use cclean to clean bits and pieces
and then ausologic to clean registry
    run anti-virus scan...
    disable all anti-viral
do a window update check..reboot etc.
remove all sdcards..they use usb ports..
ensure no programs are running...stop all unnessary programs...
run Express install program as administrator..

Well after uninstall GE 6 times I gave up on it ever working.

Then Garmin Express v4.0.8.0 came out.
I installed it clean and it worked.........

So so much for it could be your virus program, or maybe your Firewall, or did you install it as Admin.
The bottom line here is Garmin knows the problems and needs to be transparent.
Try admitting that there are problems to start with, that is the only way to support your user base.

Support needs to spend a lot more time here in this forum.
  • Often a 'clean install' will work when others haven't. Good to know you got it working at last.

You can see the changelogs for the various versions here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?212881-Garmin-Express-Release-Notes and to be fair to the Express team they check in here far more often than other parts of Garmin.
