Problem updating map

Hi

I have a lifetime subscription to EU maps.

However, I can't seem to update to the latest maps, called "nüMaps Lifetime - EUNT 2015.20", to my old, but still working and useful "nüvi 1350". The first thing Garmin Express tells me is that I need to download the maps to my computer (Windows 7), and then use Basecamp to transfer to my device.

But after some time downloading, I get a message from Garmin Express that the installation failed, and that there was a problem installing the map to the computer (note, I did not want to install to the computer - I wanted to install to my Garmin device). There is not really any more useful information. I can see a lot of files downloaded to my computer, but Garmin Express just tells me the installation failed. Can I turn on "useful information" or something?

Using Basecamp afterwards doesn't really help either. If I choose menu "maps -> install maps", it tells me "No unlocked maps were found for this device.". No idea what that means.

Anyone have similar problems with Garmin Express? It can see my device, but installation of maps simply doesn't work.

Thanks,
Peter
  • There could be various reasons for this. I'd try the download again and see if that works.

    Greetings, I have simillar problem.
    Lifetime subscription for EU maps.
    I have nuvi 2595.
I updated Garmin Express sw to the latest, but that didn't fix the problem:
everytime I start updating maps, the download of maps ends at 70% with message download failed.
I have standard ADSL internet connection.
    What to do with it?

We had the same problem with the NA versions in the past, turned out to be our old ISP provider. But they had some weird things in place that even made pulling your e-mail difficult if you weren't at home. Once we changed providers that problem of get the updated maps went away. You might try a library, we have used them with success in the past while traveling.

As far as I can tell, my download completes ok - there is approx 3.9 GB of files downloaded to the filesystem on my computer. But then Garmin Express tells me "There was a problem installing to the computer". Strange, because I don't want to *install* to my computer at all... and no specification of what the error actually is.

Is there any way to download the maps and then install it perhaps manually?
Since the original sw is not working as it should.
The lifetime update was not for free..

Since your Nuvi 1350 is an Australian device and the Europe maps were added with the City Navigator Europe NT DVD back in 2011 the Europe map updates will always install to the computer only. Once installed, use MapInstall to select and send them to the Nuvi or microSD card. Your account shows that the Europe 2015.20 maps were unlocked today which would indicate the download and installation to the computer is complete. If you continue to have install issues you can go to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Core Update Service\MAP-EUNT-2015-20\IMG\ on your computer and double click on the CityNavigatorEuropeNT2015.20Update.msi icon to start the install manually. This location applies for Windows Vista and newer operating systems.

Once the install is complete open MapInstall. If the City Naavigator Europe NT 2015.20 are locked, you need to "Retrieve" the Unlock code for MapInstall. Use the instructions in the FAQ: How do I unlock maps with MapInstall?

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi - thanks for your reply. Unfortunately things don't seem to be as you describe.

If I use "MapInstall", and choose the menu "Manage Map Products", I can only select one map called "Global Map", and it is not locked - actually it says "not lockable".

It is not possible to search for other downloaded maps.

If I try to run the other program you mention (CityNavigatorEuropeNT2015.20Update.msi), it is actually at path "H:\garmin\MAP-EUNT-2015-20\IMG". Not that I think that matters. My C drive is really only for my operating system, and there was not enough room to download the maps to it.

Anyway, this program does not work either. One of the first screens allows me to select the drive to install the maps to, so I choose "H:\garmin_map_install". But when I click the "Install" button, I get an error message saying "out of disk space". Strange, because I have 300GB free on the H drive. Then I can see that the program is actually trying to install to C, even though I selected H... what? It appears not to be possible to choose another drive.

I don't mean to be disparaging, and I appreciate your help, but are Garmin products really this bad?

Thanks for any more help you can offer,
    Peter
  • Manage map products etc that you mention leads me to think you're talking about Basecamp, not MapInstall. Look under All Programs, Garmin and choose MapInstall. If your maps have downloaded to your PC then this should then enable you to send the map to your nuvi.

As for Garmin products being 'really this bad', I've had very few problems in my years of using Garmin products, your experience isn't usual.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am quite sure it is MapInstall! :-)

It cannot see the maps I have downloaded - and as far as I can tell, they have been downloaded (there is 3.93GB of data created under "H:\garmin").

    The main screen:

    Choosing menu:

    Can only see "Global Map":

    Thanks,
