I have downloaded Garmin Express and a installed it on my laptop (windows 7 home premium) the icon is on my desktop but when i attempt to open the logo appears then i get a message Garmin Express can't open Internet connection is being blocked . Try disabling you fire wall and proxy settings and open garmin express again. I have tried this turning of windows fire wall as well a my anti virus soft ware, even tried uninstalling the AV but still get the same message

Surprise surprise - I have the same issue!

About to go on holiday - thought "I'd better update the maps" - not possible - "firewall issue"!!!!!

Had the same Garmin for 3 years - same PC for 2 - never had an issue before (apart from Garmin software usability). Stopped the a/v, turned ALL firewalls off - still a "firewall issue" - no updates.

This may be the last straw - is TomTom software more user friendly and reliable?
  • If a firewall is now stopping things getting through TT could be exactly the same, what needs dealing with is the firewall issue.

What maps are you trying to update? What program are you trying to use to do so. Exactly what error message are you getting?

Message is "Garmin Express can't open because the internet connection is being blocked"

I have tried the suggestions above re the Garmin Service, turned off both the PC firewall and router firewall (both set to prompt for access anyway) and stopped the antivirus.

Removed and reinstalled all Garmin software & tried running Express as 'Administrator'

    The same message keeps appearing
  • Are you cabled in or using wifi? If wifi try cabling. Otherwise I'm out of ideas, hopefully the Express team will be able to help further.

wifi - thx for the suggestions.

what annoys me is that it used to work fine.

PS just realised I'd left my router firewall off for the part 4 weeks :)

My opinion. The PORT that Garmin Express is using needs to be opened on the ROUTER to solve this issue. Any ideas along these lines?

Yes, this is the wrong path, the server of Garmin will never send anything back (then you are a server), only answers on requests express makes. So there are ports like 80 and 443, but outgoing they are already open, otherwise you could not post here at all.

This is not a firewall issue in a internet router, your Computer is always client and never server (only then you need to open ports) for Garmin.

Express asks the servers for information and will collect files and send information, if it's not working, express is blocked on the computer itself and cannot reach out, does not have enough permissions to do something or there is not enough disk space. Permissions can be writing in a directory or starting and running a background process.

Hey Mike you are the man, was getting very frustrated with this new Garmin Express coming from the old Garmin connect and Ant agent. But your trick has thankfully saved the day thanks again guy.
