Updating UK & Ireland map

On running Garmin Express and connecting my Nuvi205 I am advised "Map Update Available".  Clicking on 'View details' shows the update is for 'Western Europe'.  The map installed is 'UK and Ireland'.  I have made several unsuccessful attempts to update the map.  How do I update the 'UK and Ireland map' please?

  • No, if you reformat your unit it won't work. If there is no progress over time see this FAQ https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=GuclsqmdI02dC0ULxHR2T6

I'd pay particular attention to the part about free space on the device, although best to work through everything.

I'd also check that your pc isn't shutting down the usb port, particularly since you left it running overnight. A map the size of Germany should download in less than 15 minutes, the whole of EU downloads to my devices in less than 30 minutes.

  • Thanks.

I have accessed the FAQ file you suggested.

Points 1 through 3 - compliant - as far as I can tell

Point 4 -  I have run Garmin Express again expecting it to carry on from where it ended last time (New day, new cap - if any).  However it almost immediately came back with the message "Map details: Germany 2024.10 Up to date".  That confirms it is possible and there is sufficient space to download that map and still have the original 'UK and Ireland' map installed and working OK,

The next problems to be resolved are -
How to uninstall the Germany map?
How to update the 'UK & Ireland' map?  (The problem which I started with)

    Please help!

  • You can't uninstall the Garmin map and indeed there is no need to. It's difficult to know why you're having this issue, as in the other thread I linked you to the OP resolved it following my instructions, but the simplest solution is as already pointed out. Install the map to your PC using Express. Then use Garmin BaseCamp or MapInstall to send the UK map to the sd card.

If you really cannot get that to work try the cloning method here www.poi-factory.com/.../39231

  • Just to explain the process I had to use to get the UK maps loaded onto my Nuvu 205W. See the link posted by SUSSAMB for the full gory details. I needed Express to download the complete Europe map onto the PC. I had tried installing to the 205W but got stuck with only Germany. That's finished with Express. Close it.

Firstly, I installed a 32GB Sandisk microSD in an SD Adapter and put that into the Nuvi. With that connected to a front-panel USB socket on the PC, I formatted the card in Windows using the "Default allocation size" setting. Once that had finished, I started BaseCamp. That recognised the Nuvi and the SD card but crashed while trying to read the gmapprom data (I guess). I restarted BaseCamp and the second time it was able to read the gmapprom. I didn't touch the PC while it was doing that.

Once it finished, I right-clicked on the memory card nested iunder the Nuvi n the BaseCamp display and selected Install Map (from memory, it might be slightly different wording). BaseCamp fired up MapInstall and that recognised the extra space available and allowed me to select the UK map regions. It took a while to configure but completed successfully with about 350MB of space used.

I closed BaseCamp and disconnected from the PC. Starting up the Nuvi and looking in Settings shows there are a bunch of regions there that weren't before. It still says Germany is there, and the Nuvi device memory is almost completely full! Even after all of that, Express does not recognise the SD card.

It's a faff, but it works. I hope that helps.
