Unable to Install Map Update on Nuvi 2599

My Nuvi 2599 (7 years old) has the most current software version, 430 MB free of 6.6 GB internal memory, and 12.6 GB free of 14.8 GB memory card. But map update on Express (Windows 10) says there's not enough memory for installation. Current map installed is All North America, but at this point I only need Eastern U.S. Catch-22: The All North America update has to succeed before I can change to the smaller Eastern U.S. map. I've deleted all non-essential files in both the device itself and the Garmin app data on my PC, but to no avail. I've rebooted both the PC and the device several times, also to no avail. There's no indication of trouble with the SD card or the device's card reader. Is my only recourse to buy a new device?

  • Just now noticed the additions to your prior content.  What map is currently installed?  Also, I added content about clearing out some of the “old” maps at  C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map.  Do you have maps there?  Perhaps several folders, each around 6GB.  If you do delete the oldest, then clean out the recycle bin and retest.

  • Sounds as if a 32GB card would be a good investment, but I still have to convince Express that the install succeeded. Also, I put the Nuvi back out in my car and gave it a where-to. The map it displayed looked really anemic -- like missing all sorts of local streets, including the one where I live. Re: old maps left behind, when I follow that path, I see only one map folder, which is labeled Map_Map.NA.2023.20 and is using 7.45 GB storage. Presumably the NA identifies it as North America. Within that folder are nested folders containing a couple dozen sub-folders with label format 006-dnnnn-01 and each containing a single ASR, SID, or Disc Image file. All the files are dated today, and from all of that I can't tell how many (if any) maps have actually been left behind.

  • Is the nuvi operable and does it show the current map?

  • Seems to be. I haven't tried it out yet while actually driving toward a destination, but will be doing that today. (That's for a short local trip. A longer trip would be a better test.)  As for the All North America install that Express keeps telling me is available but then keeps failing because of insufficient memory (and therefore preventing me from installing a smaller U.S. only map), I guess I'll go ahead and get a 32 GB SD card and then see if the install can finally succeed with that. It won't really be updating the map because the map installed via the cloning process should already be the updated map, but maybe then Express will at last be convinced that the map is current and stop bugging me with the "update available" message!
