How to disable auto-sync (NOT auto-start-up, but auto-sync) in Garmin Express?

Hey there folks...

So I've been using Garmin Express for many years now.  I seem to recall that in the past, when I connected a Garmin device to my computer, it would show that it was connected, but wouldn't auto-sync.

Now, it seems to auto-sync every time.  There seems to be no way to disable this (I can have it so that Garmin Express isn't launched on device connect, but no way to disable it starting to sync when the device connects, if Garmin Express is running).  The reason I want to do this is due to the fact that Garmin Express tells me it has things to install, for instance, and I'd like to see what that is WITHOUT having to start a sync cycle to make it so it will tell me.  Really, there's no logical reason for Garmin Express to need the device connected to tell me what it's going to install - it already knows, why do I need the device connected?

Was this changed in the past?  Or am I misremembering?  And is there a way to disable it?

  • Here's an example of what I see right now in Garmin Express for information about an update available for a Garmin Edge device that is NOT currently connected. When I click the View Details link, AFAICT it is already showing me all the details that it has without having to plug in the device. (It only asks me to plug in the device if I click on Install.)

Are you not seeing something like this? Or what are you wanting it to show you other than this?

  • I see that.  When I click on "View Details" it prompts me to plug in the device, it won't show me the detail unless I do.

  • If you're not seeing those full details without having to plug in the device, what you're asking for now makes sense to me. I guess the question is what's different between your setup and mine. Maybe it's the computer or Garmin Express version (I'm running Windows 11, with Garmin Express 7.15.2.0), or maybe it's something about specific updates. If you click the little blue circle arrow (to check for new updates), does it behave any differently?

  • I get the details, never been asked to plug in a device.

  • The difference is quite obvious. Devices that are capable of downloading updates directly over Wi-Fi may have newer software installed since the last time it was connected to Garmin Express, and therefore Express wants to check the current software levels on the device against internal update history. If these devices are updated wirelessly, Garmin Express can not know this information until after it reads the device manifest.

I still agree, Express should just display the updates it thinks are available and let us decide if we want to connect it and install any that are outstanding.

  • As now 2 of us have confirmed that's what we get, Express does display the updates available without having to connect devices. Clearly if an update has occurred over wifi then there may be updates listed in Express that are already installed. That list should be updated once the relevant device is connected.

  • Make it 3 on that count.  Late yesterday a time zone update apparently was released, and all three of my devices show it being available with details; none are connected at the time of display.  At least one of those devices does not have lifetime maps, and likely has not been connected in a few years.

  • Make it 3 on that count.
As now 2 of us have confirmed that's what we get,

Thank you two for confirming what we already knew:

    1. Devices that do not receive updates wirelessly will show available updates in Express without first connecting the device.

    2. Devices that can receive updates wirelessly will require connection to Express before available updates are displayed.

  • But Garmin Express already showed that the updates were available. The OP's complaint was that it required connection just to see the details of the updates. Are you saying the part about showing update details differs between wireless and non-wireless capable devices?

    BINGO!

    1. Devices that do not receive updates wirelessly will show available updates in Express without first connecting the device.

    2. Devices that can receive updates wirelessly will require connection to Express before available updates are displayed.
