Garmin Express 7.13 deleting activities

Until today I was using Garmin Express 7.12.1.0 on a PC to upload activities from my Forerunner 630 and this worked fine, leaving the activity files on the watch for me to view there and/or copy elsewhere as I chose. Today the program updated to V7.13, and I found that after (successful) upload of a new activity, all activities were deleted from the watch (including any uploaded previously). I can find no release notes for this version so I am unable to determine whether the change was deliberate or not, but if it was, then what is the justification, please? Garmin devices always delete (or overwrite) the oldest activities when their storage is full, so wiping activities on upload seems to me utterly pointless and undesirable; at the very least, there should be an option to override it.

  • Yes. Happening to me. Yesterday I synced activities by wifi when I got home. Later decided to charge my Epix 2 on the PC and opened Garmin Express and it updated to 7.13. Indeed, it was after that point and installing of firmware 8.21 that my activities on the Epix were deleted/corrupted.

  • This happened to me yesterday right before updating my Fenix 7X SS, Garmin Express updated to 7.13.

All activities for the watch were wiped out.

Only the activities (from 2022) that were from my Fenix 6X remained.

    From Canada.

  • Same here with my Fenix 7X SS.

Luckily I made a backup of the whole directory structure just the day before, which I do at random intervals every once in a while. So I can see that there have been mor than 190 *.FIT files in the backup of the \Primary\GARMIN\Activities folder, which obviously represent the activities recorded with the device itself (the activities recorded with other devices seem to be stored elsewhere). After the sync with GE I found the folder completely empty.

I managed to restore all activities from my backup, but if you also want to do so, you do it at your own risk:

I copied all *.FIT files back to the folder. Additionally I downloaded the 4 activities which I did after making the backup from GC ("export original file" and unzip), renamed it in the yyyy-MM-dd-hh-mm-ss.fit format corresponding to the local time (! - I never understand why they do not use UTC …) of the activitties beginning and copied them also to the mentioned folder. After struggling with 4 little issues all the activities are back on my F7XSS, and everything seems to work fine.

    The mentioned issues are:

    1. There should be no more than 200 *.FIT-files in the Activities-folder. This is for the Fenix 7, I don't know the exact number for other devices. If the total number of restored and downloaded files exceeds this number, the oldest files should be deleted manually before disconnecting the device.
    2. The device did not recognize that it had been disconnected from the PC for some minutes. I had to switch it off by pressing the light button for more than 10 seconds. After that it booted almost normally, except that …
    3. It took a very long time on the first boot showing the message "loading FIT files", but without any intervention the booting process finally completed normally.
    4. The next sync with the Connect app on my smartphone also took a very long time, but also completed normally.

    [Edit]

I forgot to answer the 3 questions of :

    1. Yes
    2. No (as I see no sense for that, it seems not to be a problem of Connect)

  • fenix 7X SS APAC model here. After updating GE to 7.13 followed by watch software to 8.21 my May 2022 activities to-date disappeared. Those activities are still on GE as those were previously synced using Garmin Connect but no longer in watch Activity history.

I confirm that everything was fine for me after having installed 8.20 and today 8.21 and after having synced with Garmin Connect mobile.

At home, I connected Fenix 7SS to Garmin Express PC-Windows, accepted to update to 7.13.00 and after that the issue occurred. I also made a couple of tests:

    - I did a short activity and then synchronized first with the GC mobile: no problem.

    - Then I recorded another activity and synchronized with Garmin Express on PC: files disappeared on the device (directory Garmin/Activity empty), even if synch was successful (I could see the activity on my account).

Please, note I deleted these 2 activities from my GC account after the tests.

Thanks for taking care of this issue!

  • I have the same thing. 8.18. After updating garmin Express, the activities on your watch have disappeared all. Only old ones with fenix 6 remained

  • The same here, after sync with Express 7.13, all activities on my Edge 1030 are lost.
