Map installation reports inadequate space on nüvi 2475LT

The unit is a United States and Ireland and UK unit. Garmin Express installed the updated European maps but reported it did not have enough space to install the latest US maps. Previously the US maps were installed on an installed 32 GB SD card but on this occasion the card was not "seen".

I have had practically no support from Garmin UK and I tried MapInstall instead to see if I could get the maps onto the SD card. That made a real mess of things. The only advice I got from Garmin support was about deleting map files and informed not to delete a gmapprom.img file. I could not find that file.

How can I fix this problem? Would doing a factory reset return the unit to the original setup including the original maps so I could attempt to update to the latest ones? How would I direct Garmin Express to install a map on the SD card?

  • Ok, some progress then. If you're using the card that was your clone you need to delete/move certain files, the detail is in the POI Factory article. Once that's done your nuvi should read the map. In particular relevant files should be moved out of the .system folder into the Garmin folder and map files into a new folder named Map. The empty .system folder should then be deleted as should the GarminDevice.xml file.

  • I only read the original poi file. I didn't notice the link to the updated version. I have now followed those extra instructions except for the SID folder. I do not have enough space on the nuvi to copy those files in. It also wouldn't let me copy the SID folder over either. That folder on the nuvi has files all dated 2019 or 2020. Can I delete those files on the nuvi?

If I delete the .System folder then all that will be left on the SD card will be the Garmin and Map folders.

Does it look as if success is close at hand? I'm sure you will not be sorry. I really appreciate your assistance and patience. I am afraid of making a total mess or indeed rendering the unit entirely useless.

If this works will the same procedure have to be followed for further updates?

  • Yes, once the .system folder is empty it can be deleted. Don't worry about the SID folder, everything should work without it.

In future Express should update as normal, why you had an issue this time I don't know.

  • Success at last?

What is the SID folder and its contents for?

The European maps are, hopefully, on the nuvi and the North American ones on the SD card. Both have a SID folder so which can I safely delete?

  • SID files are used by Traffic Trends, I always have that turned off.  They can be safely deleted from your SD card even if you have traffic trends enabled.  Note if you look in the SID folder on your device you may find ones with much older date/time stamps, you can delete those to save space which may enable you to copy the latest ones from the SID folder on your sd card.

  • Looks like a total success. Many thanks again for your assistance and particularly your patience. I will not be able to really test it out until my wife and I visit Chicago again, hopefully next year.

If I don't need the SID files then I won't worry about them. I'm not sure I ever used them as I am not aware of ever turning them on or off. The only question is can I safely delete them from the nuvi as well?

They are taking up a fair amount of space (1.20 GB) and if I did would it make it more likely that I will not have a similar issue again with the unit not sending the maps to the SD card?

Thanks again and all I can say is you are brilliant.

  • No worries, as for the sid files you can delete the ones with older date/time stamps .

You can though test the maps in simulation mode, no need to visit Chicago Slight smile

  • Thanks again. I am sure you are not sorry this marathon is now over.

I love Chicago and my son lives up in McHenry so Garmin, or Priscilla as I call it, gets plenty of use over there.

  • Never been to Chicago although I lived in Washington DC  for a few years. As your issue appears resolved I'll close this thread. Enjoy your next trip when you get there Slight smile
