Cannot Update Maps via Express even though a 16GB SD Card is Installed

I pulled my Edge 1000 out of winter hibernation and Express said that I had a map update. I plugged it in and it prompted me that I need an SD card installed for sufficient room. Ok, I happened to have a new 16GB micro SD card (formatted FAT32 and it's a standard class 10 Sandisk) and I put in it the 1000. I powered it up, then plugged it into my PC. I saw that it created about 9 top-level folders on the SD card, etc. Everything appeared to be fine.

Then I started up Garmin Express and it found the 1000 without issue. Map update was still there, so I started walking through the update map wizard and this time I didn't get prompted for an SD card or anything. It just returned the following message:

"We're unable to install the updates

The latest version of these maps have so much new information the we're not going to be able to fit it all on your device's internal memory. Please contact product support for help with updating your maps."

So I go from being prompted to install an SD card to when after I install one, Express just completely ignores the ~14.8 GB that are free. I've shut down and rebooted the PC, I've shut down and restarted the 1000 and made sure it connected to wifi (it did) and picked up satellites and was getting the correct time (it was).

Is this a known issue? Perhaps a bug in the Express software?

    Garmin Express problem

I too hit the issue of "The latest software does not fit on your device's internal memory...Contact Support..."with Garmin Express 5.3.1.0 on macOS. I restored an older version of Garmin Express from backup (Thanks to Time Machine) of 4.1.9.0 and it is now updating with the latest map for my device - though with an estimated completion time of 15 hours! So hopefully it will all work correctly - I should know in the morning.

So, if you've an older version of Garmin Express handy, try that first - it looks like a bug in the 5.3.1.0 version at least.

  • The cycle maps should update properly now with Garmin Express 5.3.1.0. Please contact Product Support if Express still shows an error for the update.

    Garmin Express 5.4.0.0 still errors

I just downloaded the latest Garmin Express 5.4.0.0 to update my Edge Touring Plus with the 2017.10 Cycle touring maps, and no, it still doesn't see the SD card so the update fails with the error that the internal memory isn't large enough.

There's an update now and it seems to have fixed the issue.

    Success with 5.4.0.0

I successfully updated the European Cycle maps but first had to remove the stuff that Garmin Express had cached under my home directory (Library > Application Support > Garmin > Express in my case) and then start Garmin Express and re-configure it with my device and then do the update. It seems that there was something cached there that was causing problems, so reinstalling the App or just installing the new version is not enough. All old traces of it need to be removed first!
