I pulled my Edge 1000 out of winter hibernation and Express said that I had a map update. I plugged it in and it prompted me that I need an SD card installed for sufficient room. Ok, I happened to have a new 16GB micro SD card (formatted FAT32 and it's a standard class 10 Sandisk) and I put in it the 1000. I powered it up, then plugged it into my PC. I saw that it created about 9 top-level folders on the SD card, etc. Everything appeared to be fine.
Then I started up Garmin Express and it found the 1000 without issue. Map update was still there, so I started walking through the update map wizard and this time I didn't get prompted for an SD card or anything. It just returned the following message:
"We're unable to install the updates
The latest version of these maps have so much new information the we're not going to be able to fit it all on your device's internal memory. Please contact product support for help with updating your maps."
So I go from being prompted to install an SD card to when after I install one, Express just completely ignores the ~14.8 GB that are free. I've shut down and rebooted the PC, I've shut down and restarted the 1000 and made sure it connected to wifi (it did) and picked up satellites and was getting the correct time (it was).
Is this a known issue? Perhaps a bug in the Express software?
