Garmin Express Does Not Recognize SD Card

Hi all, new to this forum but not to Garmin. For quite awhile now I have been having a problem updating my Nuvi 50. When I plug it in it shows connected and says I have a map update. I tell it to update and it goes to "Preparing Device" for a few minutes. Then it tells me that it needs to be put on an SD card and that I need to install one. There is already one installed and has been for probably over a year now.

If I hook the Nuvi up to my wife's computer with Garmin Express the update goes normal. This indicates to me that it is not the Nuvi but something about MY computer. Possibly a corrupt file or something. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Express a couple of times with REVO uninstall and have done a search for everything containing Garmin and deleted them but still have the problem.

I know I can just continue to update it with my wife's computer but it is driving me crazy on why it won't work on my computer. Any help is appreciated. CC
  • Garmin Express not showing memory card

In a related question, I can see my 3597 memory card in Windows seven, in BaseCamp, but with the current version of Garmin Express I see no indication of the card being installed. Seems like I recall in older versions of Garmin Express I did see the memory card, but not sure... btw the memory card in the 3597 is a 28gb card.

I raise this point as can't see how a USB driver issue as discussed above could be relevent to what I'm seeing since windows seven file manager and Basecamp clearly sees the memory card, but it does not show up in Garmin Express. This sounds like an issue with Garmin Express itself...

Is what I'm seeing consistent with other's experience?

I just checked on a 2nd windows 7 machine (my laptop) and see the same results as above.....
  • Express has never shown or even acknowledged the card, but will use one if needed. It's a failing of Express in my opinion, other utilities recognise the card and ask if it should be associated with the device. Why Express can't do that I don't know.
  • Garmin Express/GPS use of SD memory

Express has never shown or even acknowledged the card, but will use one if needed.

I realize this could be construed as a GPS question (in particular asking regarding my 3597) but does anyone know or know of documentation explaining how Garmin Express and the related GPS will make use of the SD Card as the main memory reaches its limit?

For example.... I have tried downloading my rather extensive list of routes computed on Basecamp to the SD card which works, and the GPS finds them, but from examining the memory space afterwards it appears the GPS is simply replicating the routes back into internal memory for operational use. The GPS erase function will erase the routes in internal memory but leaves them on the SD card, which the GPS no longer sees.

Regarding maps, I don't see a function in Garmin Express when new maps are available to load the new maps onto the SD card.. Will maps loaded there even work?

Net: How does one make effective use of the SD Card for mapping/routing purposes? The obvious concern is as the updated maps get larger and larger, will there come a day that the internal memory won't hold them and in my case having a 28gb SD card available the software won't effectively use it....
  • Express will load the map to the card if necessary. My map for example has been on the card for a while and works perfectly well.

As for other files all nuvis take any waypoints etc sent to the device/card and merge it with what is already in memory that cannot be accessed by the user. You can then safely delete any gpx files you've sent to your device.
  • The internal storage on my Nuvi 765T recently became too small for CNNA map updates. Now when I do updates with Express it pops a dialog box informing me there is insufficient space and offering me the options to either install to the SD card that is installed in the device (and tells me how much space the card needs), or to select a smaller region to install.

Is this the same way it handles this situation on other devices?

    ...ken...
  • It's how it works on mine and how I understand it's meant to work.

I too have the same problem but I'm running Windows 10. I can see the memory card in the device and I can format it as well but cannot get Express to acknowledge its presence. Strange thing is that the device knows about the SD card because it can read the previous version of maps from it when used in navigation mode. Surely a fault in Express? Garmin refuse to accept this and want me to swap it for a replacement unit and charge me nearly £100 for the privilege.

    Help anyone?
  • Garmin Express 4.2.0.0 - fix for not detecting SD Card on a number of devices

    Garmin Express Release 4.2.0.0
    • Fixed an issue with Express not detecting an SD card in a number of devices.

When I saw this fix release I had hoped it would also include a bar display of available memory on the SD card similar to the display for main memory..

    Perhaps some day.....

When I saw this post I was really hoping that this would fix my problem. Nope, same issue. Thanks again
